## The Cat in the Hat

Original prompts to use with your copy.

The Cat in the Hat is written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss. Bring a family or library
copy and try these original Curiosi prompts about language and character choices.
Readers can enjoy listening to the rhyme, discuss a detail, or make their own everyday
picture cards after reading.

Step one

### Warm up your listening ears

Before reading, say two everyday words such as key and tree. Ask what the child
notices about their ending sounds. Try another pair that does not rhyme and compare.
Then look at the book’s cover and invite a question about the picture. There is
no need to know the story before sharing an observation.

Step two

### Hear a pattern and check a picture

While reading your copy, pause when the child notices a rhyme or a repeated sound.
Let them point to a useful picture clue for a word they are exploring. Ask how the
pace of the reading affects the mood. Join in only as much as the child wishes;
listening without performing is also participation.

Step three

### Think about a character’s choice

After reading, choose a decision from your copy to discuss. What might the character
want, and how does the choice affect someone else? Find a clue in the words or illustration.
Consider a different choice and explain why it might help. Readers can enjoy a surprising
scene while having different views about its characters’ actions.

Step four

### Make everyday rhyme cards

Draw a key, tree, bell, and shell on separate pieces of reused paper. Say each word
aloud and match the pairs by ending sound. A partner can point or gesture while
an adult names the objects. Add another pair you invent, then try a short original
sentence about one card without copying the book’s lines.

## Keep the conversation going

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Which sounds helped you match a rhyme pair?

Think

What clue explained a character’s choice?

Imagine

How might another choice affect someone else?

**Make something:** Invent two simple characters sharing a drawing table. Sketch
a choice one could make and a helpful response from the other. Explain your ideas
in your own words.
