## The Birth of Lord Rama

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

In the Hindu sacred epic the Ramayana, Ayodhya is ruled by King Dasharatha. Though
he has a great kingdom, he longs for children. The story of Rama’s birth brings
together his family’s hope and a divine purpose. In this tradition, Vishnu will
come into the human world as Rama.

Chapter one

### The king’s prayer

Dasharatha performs a sacred ritual in the hope of welcoming children. At the same
time, the gods seek Vishnu’s help against Ravana’s destructive power. Vishnu chooses
Dasharatha as his father in the human world. A royal family’s longing is thus joined
to a much larger story. In the ritual fire, a radiant divine messenger appears,
carrying a golden vessel filled with a special sweet preparation called payasa.

Chapter two

### The golden vessel

The messenger presents the payasa to Dasharatha and tells him to give it to his
queens. The king receives the vessel with reverence. He shares the sacred preparation
among Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi. The queens accept it joyfully. Dasharatha’s
prayer has received an answer, although he must still wait for the births. The palace
looks towards the coming months with hope. This is a divine gift within the story,
rather than an ordinary meal.

Chapter three

### Four princes arrive

In time, Kausalya gives birth to Rama. Kaikeyi becomes the mother of Bharata, while
Sumitra welcomes Lakshmana and Shatrughna. The family now has four sons. The Ramayana
celebrates their arrival with music, heavenly rejoicing, and gifts. Ayodhya shares
in the happiness. The long period of waiting has given way to a new beginning, full
of care for the little princes.

Chapter four

### Names and new beginnings

The sage Vasistha gives the children their names. As the princes grow, they learn
and develop their abilities. Lakshmana becomes especially close to Rama, and Shatrughna
is closely attached to Bharata. Their lives will lead into the much longer events
of the Ramayana. This retelling rests here, at the joyful beginning: four brothers,
a grateful family, and a city celebrating a sacred birth.

Shatrughna. Arrange them as a family group and retell how their arrival changes
