## The Churning of the Ocean

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

In this Hindu sacred account, the devas seek Lord Vishnu’s help. Their strength
has weakened, and they hope to obtain amrita, the nectar of immortality, from the
Ocean of Milk. Vishnu advises a truce with the asuras. The two rival groups will
need to work together for the great churning to begin.

Chapter one

### An extraordinary plan

The devas make an agreement with the asuras, whose leader is Bali. They prepare
Mandara Mountain as a huge churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as a rope. Moving
a mountain is beyond their strength, and Vishnu helps bring it to the ocean on Garuda’s
back. The task is immense before a single pull of the serpent has begun. Even powerful
beings need help to carry out this plan.

Chapter two

### Support beneath the waves

The two groups pull Vasuki back and forth around Mandara. But the heavy mountain
sinks. Vishnu takes the form of Kurma, a mighty tortoise, and supports it on his
back. The churning can continue. Then a terrible poison rises from the sea. Those
in danger turn to Shiva, who takes the poison to protect the world. His throat becomes
blue. The great effort has brought danger before it brings the hoped-for nectar.

Chapter three

### Wonders from the ocean

The churning begins again. A sacred cow, a magnificent horse, elephants, jewels,
and other wonders emerge. Then Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, appears. She is
received with reverence and chooses Vishnu as her consort. The ocean has yielded
many treasures, yet the quest is not over. At last Dhanvantari rises, carrying the
vessel of amrita. The prize that both groups have sought is finally before them.

Chapter four

### The nectar and the quarrel

The asuras seize the vessel and quarrel over it. Vishnu appears in the form of Mohini,
and they entrust the nectar to her. She arranges the groups in separate rows and
gives the amrita to the devas. The old rivalry has returned; their earlier agreement
has not produced a peaceful sharing. This condensed account ends with the devas
receiving the nectar. The larger traditional story includes further conflict and
many more details.

**truce**an agreement to pause a conflict

**churn**to move something repeatedly to mix or separate it

**consort**a husband or wife, especially in royal or divine accounts

**amrita**the nectar of immortality in this tradition

**Tradition and retelling**

A condensed retelling of Bhagavata Purana 8.6–9. Some dangers and later conflicts,
including the Rahu episode, are omitted. Shiva’s act belongs to a sacred account
of divine power; it is not an action for people to imitate. The ending retains the
unequal distribution described in this version.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why does the mountain need Kurma’s support?

Think

What danger appears before the treasures?

Imagine

What happens to the agreement when the nectar arrives?

**Make something:** Draw a four-box sequence: the plan, Kurma’s support, the emerging
treasures, and the nectar. Add one sentence below each box to explain the order
of events.
