A story to read together

## The Clever Washerman

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Sajan washed and cared for cloth in a village beside the river. He was known for
returning each bundle neatly folded and dry. One market morning, several customers
arrived together. A merchant brought a pale shawl, an older woman brought a pale
tablecloth, and others carried everyday clothing. Sajan checked the bundles, noted
their details, and arranged them in separate baskets before beginning his work.

Chapter one

### The wrong-sized shawl

The following afternoon, the merchant returned carrying a folded bundle. “You have
ruined my shawl,” he said. “It is much shorter and wider than before!” Sajan opened
the cloth on a clean table. It did seem too wide to be the merchant’s long shawl.
For a moment, the washerman worried that he had made a costly mistake. The merchant
spoke louder, and people began gathering near the gate. Sajan asked him to wait
while they checked the cloth carefully. An angry guess would not help either of
them find the answer.

Chapter two

### The blue leaf

Sajan examined the woven border. Near one corner, a tiny blue leaf was worked into
the pale thread. He remembered seeing that detail on the older woman’s tablecloth.
The merchant’s shawl had a narrow row of red diamonds instead. Sajan fetched his
notes and compared the descriptions. Just then, the older woman arrived with another
folded bundle. “This is beautiful,” she said, “but I am quite sure my table has
not grown long and thin overnight.” The merchant paused. For the first time, someone
in the courtyard smiled.

Chapter three

### Two bundles side by side

They spread both cloths on the table. One had the blue leaf in its border; the other
had the row of red diamonds. The customers recognised their own pieces at once.
Sajan checked the rest of the bundles and discovered that he had placed these two
finished items in the wrong collection baskets during the busy morning. The cloth
had not changed shape. The bundles had changed owners. He apologised clearly, exchanged
them, and made sure both customers were satisfied before folding anything away.

Chapter four

### A better way to check

The merchant apologised for accusing Sajan before checking. “I saw one surprising
thing and decided I knew why it had happened,” he admitted. Sajan thanked the older
woman for her patience, then improved his collection routine. He kept the written
description beside each finished basket and checked the border with the customer
before handing it over. His cleverness had not made him someone who never made mistakes.
It had helped him notice a small clue, admit the real error, and change the way
he worked. After that, the village sometimes spoke of problems needing “a blue-leaf
look”—one careful check before a loud conclusion.

### Word basket

**bundle**things gathered and wrapped or held together

**border**a pattern or edge around something

**accuse**to say that someone has done something wrong

**routine**a usual sequence of actions for doing a task

**Read it together**

This is an original folktale-style story. The washerman both solves the misunderstanding
and takes responsibility for the swapped baskets. Careful thinking works best with
honest correction.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Which detail helped Sajan recognise the tablecloth?

Think

What was the actual mistake with the two bundles?

Imagine

What routine could help you avoid mixing up similar things?

**Make something:** Design two similar paper cloths with different small border
patterns. Swap them with a partner and explain which clues identify each one.
