A story to read together

## The Foolish Brahmin

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Somu, a village scholar, received a small pot of grain after helping a neighbour
read an old family letter. He thanked her and carried the gift home. The grain would
make several meals, but Somu also wondered whether he could save some and plant
it. He sat beneath a shady tree, set the pot on a mat beside him, and began imagining
what the future might hold.

Chapter one

### A pot full of possibilities

“If I keep a little grain for seed,” Somu thought, “perhaps it will grow into a
fine crop.” That was a sensible possibility. But his imagination soon hurried far
beyond it. He pictured selling sack after sack at the market. With the earnings,
he would buy a goat. Then he imagined a whole herd of goats, followed by a comfortable
house and a garden with fruit trees. He had not yet checked where he could plant
the seed or how he would water it. In his mind, however, the fruit trees were already
tall.

Chapter two

### The grand celebration

Somu imagined inviting his neighbours to a celebration beneath the trees. He would
serve delicious meals and tell everyone about the clever plan that had begun with
one small pot. He pictured musicians arriving at the gate. Their drums grew louder
in his daydream, and he tapped one foot on the ground. Soon he was practising an
imaginary dance, smiling at guests who were not there. His heel caught the edge
of the mat. The pot tipped, rolled against a stone, and cracked. Grain scattered
across the courtyard.

Chapter three

### Back in the courtyard

The sharp sound brought Somu back to the real morning. There was no herd, no grand
house, and no celebration—only a broken pot and a few curious sparrows. His neighbour
heard the noise and came over. Somu explained what had happened, feeling embarrassed.
She helped him collect the clean grain from the mat and set it in a sound container.“
There is nothing wrong with imagining a good future,” she said. “But you still need
to notice where you have put your feet.” Somu laughed a little, because that was
exactly what he had forgotten.

Chapter four

### A smaller, better plan

This time, Somu wrote down the first steps. He would keep enough grain for meals,
ask an experienced gardener about suitable seed, and find out whether he had a place
to grow it. He would not count on a harvest before learning what the work required.
The plan was much smaller than his daydream, but it was something he could begin.
Later, when an idea carried him too far ahead, he remembered the cracked pot. A
foolish moment did not have to define him. It could remind him to bring imagination
and careful attention back together.

**practical**useful and possible to carry out

**attention**careful noticing of what is happening

**Read it together**

This is an original retelling of a traditional daydreaming tale. The title describes
one character’s mistaken choice; it is not a judgement about a community or a person’s
lasting worth. Dreams and practical planning can help each other.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Which part of Somu’s first idea could have been practical?

Think

What happened while he was paying attention only to his daydream?

Imagine

What first step could turn one of your ideas into a real plan?

**Make something:** Draw a dream on one side of a page and three small, realistic
first steps on the other. Circle the step you could begin with help.
