## The Kite in Grandma’s Notebook

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Asha found a red kite drawn on the first page of Grandma’s old notebook. Its tail
had three bows, and a blue square sat in the middle of one wing. “Why is that bit
a different colour?” Asha asked. Grandma settled beside her on the veranda. “That
is the part I remember best.” She turned the notebook towards the light and began
a story about a windy afternoon when she was small.

Chapter one

### The kite before the tear

In Grandma’s story, she and her friend Lata had made the kite from paper and light
sticks with an adult’s help. They wanted it ready for their afternoon in the open
field. Grandma had chosen red because she hoped to see it clearly against the pale
sky. Lata had made the three bows. Just before they left, a corner of the paper
caught on the edge of a basket. A tear opened across one wing. Grandma sat down,
sure the afternoon was spoiled.

Chapter two

### Lata’s blue square

Lata looked at the tear and fetched a leftover piece of blue paper. “We could try
a patch,” she said. Grandma did not want a different-coloured square on her beautiful
red kite. She thought everyone would notice. Lata asked whether she would rather
try the repair or leave the kite at home. Grandma thought for a while. Together,
and with help, they smoothed the patch into place and checked that the frame was
still sound. The kite did not look the way they had first planned.

Chapter three

### Three bows in the breeze

At the field, an adult helped them choose a clear place away from roads and wires.
The kite needed several careful tries before it lifted. Grandma remembered looking
up at the red shape and the small blue square. She remembered Lata laughing when
the three bows danced behind it. The patch had not magically made the kite fly.
It was one part of the repair, along with patient checking and trying again. What
made the afternoon special was having somebody beside her while they worked it out.

Chapter four

### A drawing with both colours

On the veranda, Asha traced the blue square with her eyes. “Did anyone laugh at
it?” she asked. Grandma could not remember. She remembered Lata’s hands smoothing
the paper and the feeling of the breeze. Asha opened a fresh page and drew a kite
of her own. She added one patch before drawing the tail. “Mine has a story already,”
she said. Grandma smiled. The old notebook had kept a picture of a kite. Listening
together had helped Asha find the friendship inside it.

**Read it together**

This is original fiction about an invented grandmother and childhood memory. When
inviting family stories, let the teller choose what to share; memories do not have
to be perfect or contain a lesson.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why did Grandma first dislike the blue patch?

Think

What details stayed in her memory?

Imagine

What did Asha discover by asking about the drawing?

**Make something:** Ask a willing family member about an ordinary object or picture.
Draw one detail from their answer, or invent a clearly labelled fictional memory
instead.
