## Mira and the Paper Wings

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Mira folded two little paper wings and laid them inside her story notebook. Grandma
asked what they were for. “For a child who can fly,” Mira said. “Inside the story.”
She drew a meadow made of paper flowers, a soft hill, and a silver path. Then she
imagined stepping into the page. The wings grew light and wide on her shoulders,
and a tiny paper bird rose beside her.

Chapter one

### The view from above

Mira floated over the paper meadow. From above, the silver path looked like a neat
ribbon. Every flower seemed to face the same way. “I can see the whole place,” she
told the bird. “You can see a great deal,” it replied. “Would you like to see it
from another height?” Mira was surprised. She thought flying higher must always
mean seeing more. Still, she followed the bird down towards a patch of folded grass,
where a small paper snail was trying to find the path.

Chapter two

### The hidden opening

The snail could not see over the grass. What looked like a clear ribbon from the
sky was hidden behind tall folds at ground level. Mira landed gently in the make-
believe meadow. From beside the snail, she noticed a narrow opening she had not
seen while flying. The bird asked which view was correct. Mira looked up, then down
the opening. Both views belonged to the same place. Each showed something the other
missed. She asked the snail where it wanted to go before pointing out the gap.

Chapter three

### A map with more than height

Together, they made a little picture map. Mira drew the silver path as it looked
from above. The bird added a folded flower beside the opening. The snail traced
the turn that mattered at ground level. The map became less tidy and much more useful
to its three makers. Mira could still enjoy flying. She simply stopped assuming
that wings made her the best judge of everyone else’s journey. When they reached
the soft hill, she asked whether the snail wanted to rest before continuing.

Chapter four

### The wings between the pages

Outside the story, Mira opened her eyes beside Grandma. Her small paper wings were
still resting in the notebook. They could not carry a real person, and she did not
try to make them. She added three tiny maps beneath her meadow drawing: one from
above, one from bird height, and one from the snail’s place in the grass. Grandma
studied them. “Which is your favourite?” she asked. Mira thought for a moment. “
I like what they show together.” She tucked the wings between the pages, ready for
another imaginary flight.

### Word basket

**perspective**a way of seeing something from a particular position

**meadow**an open grassy place with flowers

**detail**a small part that helps you understand something

**trace**to follow a line or shape carefully

**Read it together**

The flight happens entirely in an imagined paper world. Paper wings cannot carry
a person. Discuss how different positions reveal different details without treating
one character’s viewpoint as the only useful one.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

What did Mira miss from high above?

Think

Why did the snail’s view matter?

Imagine

How did their different drawings help the map?

**Make something:** Draw the same familiar table from above and from the side. Compare
what each drawing shows; keep the flight itself in drawings and stories.
