✦An original story about a welcome without pressure

# The Girl Who Gave a Smile

A story to read together

## The Girl Who Gave a Smile

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Asha arrived at the art table with yellow paper tucked under her arm. Her class
was making a giant picture of a sunny garden. She had been chosen to draw the sun,
and she already knew how wide its smile would be. Across the room, a boy named Rohan
stood beside the pencils. He had joined the class that week and was watching everyone
without saying much.

Chapter one

### A smile that stayed hers

Asha waved and gave Rohan her brightest smile. He looked at her, then down at the
pencils. She tried again, but his face stayed quiet. For a moment, Asha wondered
whether he disliked her. Their teacher came to collect some paint. “A welcome is
something you can offer,” she told Asha softly. “It does not tell you how someone
must feel.” Asha looked at her smiling paper sun. Perhaps a real person could need
something different from a cheerful face.

Chapter two

### The chair beside her

Asha moved her bag off the spare chair. “You can sit here if you want,” she said.
Rohan sat down after a while. She did not ask why he was quiet. She offered a sheet
of paper and pointed to the pencils. “We are making a garden. You can add something,
or watch first.” Rohan chose a green pencil. For several minutes, the only sound
between them was its soft scratch on the paper. Asha worked on the sun and let the
silence stay.

Chapter three

### A small green doorway

Rohan drew a hedge with a tiny opening. Behind it was a bench and a pond. “A hidden
garden?” Asha asked. “A quiet corner,” he replied. “Our old school had one.” Asha
asked whether he wanted to put it in their big picture. He nodded. Together they
found a space beyond the painted flowerbeds. Asha drew a little path leading towards
his opening. Rohan added stepping stones. They did not need to talk all the time
to make something together.

Chapter four

### Two ways to belong

When the picture was finished, children gathered to admire it. Asha’s sun smiled
above the flowers. Rohan’s quiet corner rested near the edge, where a painted bird
sat on the bench. He pointed it out to another child and gave a small smile of his
own. Asha was pleased, but she knew it was not a prize she had earned. Tomorrow
he might feel quiet again. She could still make room beside her. As they packed
away, she asked whether he wanted to save the green pencil for morning. “Yes, please,”
he said.

### Word basket

**welcome**a friendly way of showing someone may join

**quiet**making little noise or choosing few words

**empathy**trying to understand how someone else may feel

**offer**to make something available without forcing it

**Read it together**

This original story does not suggest that smiling fixes sadness or that children
owe others a smile. Discuss giving someone choice, company, and time. A trusted
adult can help when someone needs more support.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why did Asha change what she offered?

Think

How could Rohan join without talking a lot?

Imagine

What does Asha understand about his smile at the end?

**Make something:** Make a welcome card with two choices: join an activity or sit
nearby and watch. Ask the person which option they prefer.
