A story to read together

## The Little Girl and the Stars

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Every clear evening, Mira sat with Grandma in their courtyard and waited for the
first stars. She liked the waiting almost as much as the stars themselves. The roofs
turned purple. The day’s noisy sounds grew softer. Then a small point of light appeared
above the old neem tree. “There you are,” Mira whispered, as if greeting a friend
who had travelled a long way.

Chapter one

### A different view

One evening, their young neighbour Dev came to visit. From his low chair, the neem
branches hid much of the sky. “I can see one,” he said, pointing through a gap.
Mira almost said, “There are lots more from my place.” Instead, she sat beside him.
Now she could see the problem. Grandma suggested moving everyone’s chairs to the
open side of the courtyard. There, Dev found three bright points at once. He counted
them slowly, smiling each time he began again.

Chapter two

### Holes in the paper

The following afternoon was cloudy. Mira wondered how to keep their new evening
game. She found dark blue paper and drew a few dots with chalk. Grandma helped her
make small holes safely. When they held the paper in front of a shaded lamp, the
holes shone like a little paper sky. “They are not real stars,” Mira told Dev. “
They are places for our stories.” Dev chose a crooked row of dots and called it
a tiny kite.

Chapter three

### Everyone adds a star

Soon two more neighbours joined them. Mira offered each child a piece of paper and
asked where a star should go. One made a long curve. Another left a wide quiet space.
Their skies looked different, which gave them more to talk about. Dev invented a
story about a kite visiting the moon. Mira added a bird that always knew the way
home. Grandma listened, then asked whether the bird ever stopped for a rest. That
question started a whole new adventure.

Chapter four

### The open corner

On the next clear night, they returned to the open corner of the courtyard. Their
paper skies rested on the table. Above them, the real stars shone much farther away
than any lamp. Mira did not try to count every one. She watched Dev find the bright
point he remembered. “We kept a place for it,” he said. Mira thought they had kept
a place for something else too: another person’s view. She moved her chair a little
closer, and together they waited for the next star.

### Word basket

**courtyard**an open space beside or inside a group of buildings

**wonder**a feeling of interest and surprise

**neighbour**someone who lives nearby

**include**to make someone part of an activity

**Read it together**

This original story uses a paper sky as a craft, not a model of the real distances
between stars. Discuss how Mira checks what Dev can see before deciding what might
help.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why did Mira sit beside Dev?

Think

How did the children make their paper skies different?

Imagine

What could you change so more people can join a favourite activity?

**Make something:** Make a paper sky with an adult helping with holes. Use a cool
battery light behind it, and invite someone else to invent a shape or story.
