A story to read together

## The Little Sparrow’s Gift

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Leela was planting marigolds with Grandpa when a sparrow landed on the garden fence.
It held a dry strand of grass longer than its own body. The bird hopped once, turned,
and dropped the grass beside an empty pot. Then it flew away. “A present!” Leela
whispered. Grandpa smiled. “Perhaps it simply dropped something. We can enjoy seeing
it without knowing exactly what the bird meant.”

Chapter one

### Something light

Leela left the grass where it lay. In a little while, the sparrow returned, picked
it up, and disappeared into the leaves. “It needed it after all,” she said. She
began noticing other small things: a seed husk, a feather caught on a twig, and
the shade beneath the hibiscus. Grandpa named what he knew and said when he was
unsure. They watched from the path without looking inside nests or reaching into
the branches. The garden seemed busier when they gave themselves time to notice.

Chapter two

### A place to pause

Their neighbour Mrs Rao came through the gate carrying a bag of vegetables. She
stopped to catch her breath, but there was nowhere to sit. Leela offered to fetch
a chair. “That would be lovely,” Mrs Rao said. They sat in the shade and watched
the fence. Leela told her about the strand of grass. “It made me stop for a moment,”
she explained. Mrs Rao looked around. “A place to stop is a useful thing.” Leela
glanced at the empty patch beside the path.

Chapter three

### More than one pair of hands

Leela asked Grandpa whether a garden seat could fit there. They checked with the
people who cared for the shared garden. One neighbour had a sturdy bench that could
be repaired. Another knew how to make its loose leg safe. Adults did the repairs,
and Leela helped clean the finished seat. They placed it where people could rest
without blocking the path or crowding the shrubs. Mrs Rao tried it first. From there,
she could see both the gate and the low fence.

Chapter four

### The gift she could name

On Saturday, Leela sat on the bench with Grandpa. The sparrow landed nearby, empty-
beaked this time. It stayed only a moment before flying away. Leela did not expect
it to thank them. The bench belonged to people, and the shrubs belonged to the small
lives using them. “Did the sparrow give us this idea?” she asked. “You noticed something,
then listened to someone,” Grandpa replied. Leela watched Mrs Rao arrive and waved
her towards the shade. Whatever the bird had meant, this was a gift they could share.

**strand**one thin piece of grass, hair, or thread

**pause**to stop for a short time

**sturdy**strong enough for its purpose

**repair**to make something damaged work again

**Read it together**

The bird’s intentions are unknown in this original story. The kindness comes from
people noticing a neighbour’s request. Observe wild birds from a distance and leave
nests undisturbed.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why did Leela leave the grass where it lay?

Think

What did Mrs Rao need?

Imagine

How did different neighbours help make the seat?

**Make something:** Draw a place where people can pause. Add one feature that helps
people and one area where wildlife can remain undisturbed.
