A story to read together

## The Oak and the Reeds

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

A tall oak grew beside a stream. Nearby, thin reeds lifted their stems from the
water’s edge. When a breeze passed, their heads dipped, while the oak stood straight.

Chapter one

### The oak boasts

The oak looked down at the bending reeds. Even a small wind could move them, it
said. Its own thick trunk and spreading branches seemed much stronger.

Chapter two

### The reeds reply

The reeds were not ashamed of bending. They explained that they moved with the wind
rather than resisting every gust. Their flexible stems could yield without breaking.

Chapter three

### A stronger wind

Then a fierce storm arrived. The reeds bowed low as the gusts swept over the stream.
The oak remained stiff and upright, pushing against the growing force of the wind.

Chapter four

### After the storm

At last the oak’s roots loosened, and the great tree fell. The reeds remained at
the water’s edge. In the fable, their survival shows that adapting can sometimes
be wiser than stubborn resistance.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why does the oak think it is stronger?

Think

How do the reeds respond to the storm?

Imagine

When could changing a plan help you solve a problem?

**Make something:** Compare a straight paper strip with one folded like a fan. Gently
move both with a hand fan. Describe what changes without assuming that paper behaves
exactly like a living tree.
