The Wise Plant

✦An original windowsill fable

# The Wise Plant

A young bean plant wants to grow as impressively as possible. An older rosemary
plant helps it notice the conditions around it rather than racing against every
neighbour.

A story to read together

## The Wise Plant

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

A young bean plant grew in a pot beside the cottage window. Nearby stood a rosemary
plant with narrow leaves and a woody stem. In this fable, the bean liked to ask
questions before the morning light reached the sill. Its favourite question was
always the same: “How soon will I be the tallest plant here?” Rosemary usually answered,“
Let us notice how you are growing today.”

Chapter one

### The tallest idea

The bean compared itself with everything it could see. A sunflower in the garden
seemed wonderfully tall. A trailing plant on the shelf reached far across its pot.
Even the rosemary had a stronger-looking stem. The bean imagined stretching past
the window frame in a single morning. “Would that make you comfortable?” Rosemary
asked. The bean had not thought about comfort. It was busy thinking about height.
Outside, the sunflower moved in the breeze, growing in a different place with different
space around its roots.

Chapter two

### A basket in the light

One afternoon, a large basket was left between the bean and the brightest part of
the window. Over the following days, its growing stem leaned towards the light that
still reached it. “I am becoming crooked,” the bean complained. Rosemary looked
at the shadow across the sill. “You are responding to what is around you,” it said
in the language of the story. A child who helped care for the plants noticed the
lean too. Instead of pulling the stem straight, she moved the basket and asked the
gardener to check the bean’s space.

Chapter three

### Help for the way it grew

The gardener looked at the pot, the light, and the young stem. A suitable support
gave the bean somewhere to climb as it grew. The child checked it regularly rather
than expecting an instant change. The bean still did not look like Rosemary, and
Rosemary did not begin climbing the support. Their different shapes were not mistakes.“
You have been here a long time,” the bean said. “Is that why you are wise?” Rosemary
rustled gently. “In this story, perhaps wisdom means paying attention before deciding
what needs to change.”

Chapter four

### A new morning question

As the weeks passed, the bean put out new leaves and wound around its support. Some
changes were easy to see; others happened more quietly. The child marked small observations
in a notebook: a new leaf, a longer stem, a day when the soil needed checking. The
bean’s morning question changed. Instead of asking when it would be tallest, it
asked what it could notice today. Rosemary remained beside it, green and fragrant.
They were not growing towards the same shape or at the same speed. The windowsill
had room for more than one healthy way to be a plant.

### Word basket

**respond**to change or act because of something around you

**support**something that helps hold another thing steady

**condition**a surrounding factor that affects what can happen

**patient**willing to give something the time it needs

**Read it together**

The plants’ conversation is make-believe. Real plants respond to conditions such
as light, water, and space in different ways. Discuss observing a plant’s needs
instead of assuming that faster or taller always means better.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

What was the bean’s first favourite question?

Think

What changed around it when the basket blocked the light?

Imagine

How did the child’s careful observations help more than simply pulling the stem
straight?

**Make something:** Observe a plant over several days. Draw small changes in leaves,
shape, or direction, and write one question you would like to ask about its needs.
