## The Brave Little Tailor

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Arun the tailor had finished a blue waistcoat with seven bright buttons, all sewn
neatly in one row. He was so pleased with his careful work that he wore it on his
walk to the next village. At the meadow gate, a giant bent down to look. “Seven
at once?” the giant asked, noticing Arun counting the buttons. “Seven enemies?”
Arun laughed. “Seven buttons. Each one needed to be done properly.”

Chapter one

### A very large opinion

The giant looked disappointed. He was used to hearing stories about enormous feats.“
Buttons are rather small,” he said. Arun glanced at the giant’s green coat. A long
tear ran beneath one pocket, but he said nothing about it yet. “Small things can
still be surprising,” the tailor replied. The giant placed a smooth pebble on a
flat stone table. “Can you squeeze water from that?” he asked. Arun considered the
challenge, then took a soft piece of white cheese from his lunch cloth.

Chapter two

### The cheese and the pebble

Arun pressed the cheese between his fingers, and a few drops of moisture fell onto
the table. For a moment, the giant looked astonished. Then Arun opened his hand.“
Cheese,” he said, smiling. “Not a stone. It would be a poor sort of cleverness if
I let you believe otherwise.” The giant gave a rumbling laugh. “You changed the
problem.” “Yes,” said Arun. “Sometimes a different idea is more useful than a stronger
grip.” The giant picked up his pebble, examined it, and decided it could remain
a pebble.

Chapter three

### A problem the giant could not hold

As the giant straightened, the tear beneath his pocket grew a little longer. He
tried to hide it with his hand. “I cannot hold a needle small enough for the cloth,”
he admitted. “And every thread I try seems too thin.” Arun asked him to sit comfortably
beside the table. From his basket, he chose a sturdy needle and strong thread. The
giant held the coat steady while the tailor worked. Neither could have managed the
job as easily alone: Arun needed help with the huge fabric, and the giant needed
the tailor’s careful stitches.

Chapter four

### Seven buttons and one good repair

When the seam was secure, the giant ran a gentle finger along it. “That is impressive,”
he said. “Even though I can hardly see the stitches.” Arun packed his tools and
shared the rest of his cheese. They walked towards the village together, one taking
small steps and the other slowing his long stride. Arun had not defeated a monster
or pretended to be stronger than he was. He had answered honestly, tried a playful
idea, and used a skill another person needed. His seven buttons still shone in the
sunlight. Beside them, the giant’s mended pocket held a pebble that had been allowed
to remain exactly itself.

**tailor**a person who makes or repairs clothes

**feat**something difficult or remarkable that is done

**sturdy**strong and dependable

**seam**the line where pieces of cloth are sewn together

**About this reimagining**

This gentle version uses the traditional small-tailor and giant motifs, with seven
buttons and a different cooperative ending. It is not an unabridged retelling of
the older tale. Discuss why Arun explains his cheese trick instead of keeping up
a false claim.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

What did the giant first misunderstand about the seven buttons?

Think

Why did Arun reveal what he had actually squeezed?

Imagine

How did the giant and tailor each help with the coat?
