A story to read together

## The Dancing Shoes

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

The shoemaker’s window held boots, sandals, slippers, and one pair of turquoise
shoes with silver star buttons. When Nina passed, the shoes tapped twice against
the shelf. She tapped twice in reply. The older shoemaker, Ms Tess, looked up from
her work. “They like a conversation,” she said. “Would you like to borrow them for
the village dance? You may stop and rest whenever you choose.”

Chapter one

### A hundred remembered dances

At home, Nina tried the shoes on. They fitted comfortably, and a thin sparkle appeared
around each silver button. The left shoe began a slow, sweeping step. The right
shoe answered with a quick little hop. Nina stopped and sat down. The shoes became
still at once. “You remember different music,” she guessed. Ms Tess had said that
the pair had been to a hundred celebrations. Perhaps the left shoe was still thinking
about a waltz while the right one remembered a skipping song.

Chapter two

### Listening before stepping

Nina put on the pair again and tapped a simple rhythm with her hands. She moved
slowly, one step and then another, giving both shoes time to follow. A tiny glowing
footprint appeared on the floor, then faded. When she hurried, the shoes mixed their
old steps again. So she paused, listened, and began with the rhythm she could actually
hear. Soon the two shoes were moving together. Nina was not copying a hundred perfect
dances. She was finding a small dance that belonged to this afternoon.

Chapter three

### The tune at the fair

At the village gathering, musicians began a lively tune Nina did not know. For a
moment, she worried that the shoes would have the answer while she did not. But
they waited. She listened to the drum, tried a gentle tap, and smiled at a friend
across the floor. Her friend answered with a turn. Nina added a little hop, and
the shoes followed. Soft sparkling footprints glowed behind them for an instant.
When she felt tired, she stepped aside for water and a rest. The magic waited without
tugging her back.

Chapter four

### One more dance

Later, Ms Tess sat beside her. “Did they teach you all their dances?” she asked.
Nina shook her head. “We listened to the one happening now.” The shoemaker nodded.“
Then they have learned something too.” Nina returned the shoes the next morning,
brushing away the dust before placing them on the counter. Ms Tess helped her sew
small silver stars onto her own ordinary pair. They did not make glowing footprints,
but Nina found that she could still listen, step, pause, and begin again. In the
shop window, the turquoise shoes tapped twice. This time Nina answered with a rhythm
entirely her own.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why did the two shoes begin with different steps?

Think

How did Nina help them move together?

Imagine

What helps you enjoy a new activity at a pace that suits you?

**Make something:** Create a short dance using three movements and one pause. Let
a partner add a movement, then choose together how fast to perform it.
