A story to read together

## The Invisible Ring

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

In the repair shop beside the park, Ishan found a silver ring with one tiny blue
dot. The shopkeeper had made it for a magician who no longer wanted to disappear
during his performances. “You may borrow it until sunset,” she said. “But tell anyone
you are playing with what it does.” Ishan slid it onto his finger and watched his
hand fade from sight.

Chapter one

### A very unusual game

At first, being invisible felt wonderfully silly. Ishan waved at his reflection
and saw only the garden behind him. He lifted a fallen leaf, making it seem to float.
He meant to find his friend Meera and explain everything. Then he saw her setting
out the picnic they had planned. A plate of little cakes stood beside the basket.
Ishan reached for one without thinking. The cake seemed to rise through the air,
then vanish. Meera turned towards the table just as he took another.

Chapter two

### The missing friend

Meera looked at the plate, the grass, and the empty gate. “Ishan?” she called. He
nearly answered, but the joke had begun to feel awkward. She had brought a kite
for them to fly and was wondering why he had not arrived. When she noticed crumbs
appearing near the bench, she frowned. “If this is a trick, I do not like it.” Ishan
could see her face clearly. For the first time, he thought about what the invisible
game felt like from the other side.

Chapter three

### Coming back into view

He removed the ring. His shoes, shirt, and embarrassed face returned all at once.“
I should have told you,” he said. “And I took two cakes without asking.” Meera was
relieved to see him, but she was still upset. “I was waiting for my friend,” she
replied. “I did not agree to play a disappearing game.” Ishan apologised without
calling it only a joke. They sat for a moment while he explained the ring. Then
he asked what would help put the afternoon right.

Chapter four

### A game they both chose

With help from Meera’s father, Ishan made a small extra batch of cakes for the picnic.
Afterwards, Meera agreed to one short game with the ring. They chose a clear garden
area and simple rules together, and Ishan spoke whenever she asked where he was.
It was funny because they were both enjoying it. Before sunset, he returned the
ring to the shopkeeper. “Did disappearing teach you anything?” she asked. Ishan
thought of the empty gate, the missing cakes, and Meera’s worried face. “It helped
me notice how much a friend needs to know I am there,” he said. Then he hurried
back to fly the kite in plain sight.

This is an original fantasy. Talk about the difference between a game everyone has
agreed to and a surprise that makes someone uncomfortable. Ishan repairs the mistake
through actions as well as an apology.
