A story to read together

## The Magic Pencil

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Pavi found the short wooden pencil inside a box of buttons from her grandmother’s
cupboard. It looked too ordinary to be a treasure. She sharpened it, opened her
drawing book, and drew a fish with a long curling tail. As the first evening shadow
reached the page, the fish shone gold. Then it lifted off the paper and swam slowly
through the air above her desk.

Chapter one

### The fish that shone

Pavi held her breath. The fish had no weight when it brushed her hand; it was made
entirely of soft light. She drew another, then a star, a silver leaf, and a tiny
moon. Each shape rose from the page. The room filled with a silent, glittering parade.
Grandmother came to the door and stood smiling in astonishment. “It seems your pencil
has been waiting for an evening,” she said. Pavi discovered that the little white
eraser could bring each shining shape back to the paper.

Chapter two

### A room full of stars

Soon Pavi wanted a whole sky. She drew so many stars that she could hardly see the
window between them. The bright shapes crowded the room, shining across Grandmother’s
chair and into the hallway. Pavi had planned to draw a quiet picture for the wall,
but she had made it difficult for anyone to settle down. She put the pencil aside.
Outside, the garden was growing dark, with a few wandering glimmers near the hedge.
In this magical garden, little lantern bugs were searching for the gaps that led
to their leafy nests.

Chapter three

### A path through the dark

Pavi erased the crowded stars, watching them return to her page one by one. She
kept a single golden fish. Then she drew a trail of small dots from the window towards
the hedge. The fish swam along it, and the storybook lantern bugs drifted after
its soft glow. At the hedge, Pavi drew a little arch of light around each open gap.
The garden no longer looked dark and confusing. It looked like a place with several
small doors, each leading where someone needed to go.

Chapter four

### The picture that could fade

By morning, the drawings had settled back into the book. No shining fish remained
above the desk, and the garden had become an ordinary garden again. Pavi wondered
whether the pencil’s magic had ended. She drew a small leaf. It stayed on the paper—
but she noticed its veins, its shape, and the way a real leaf caught sunlight outside.
That evening, the leaf glowed softly. Pavi smiled and drew only what she had a place
for. Sometimes it was a dancing fish. Sometimes it was one small light near the
window. She had learned that imagination could be wonderfully bright without needing
to fill every corner.

### Word basket

**glimmer**a small, soft light

**astonishment**a feeling of great surprise

**outline**a line showing the outside shape of something

**fade**to become less bright or clear

**Read it together**

This is an original fantasy. The floating drawings and lantern bugs belong to its
magical world. Ask how Pavi’s second drawing plan differs from her first.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

How could Pavi bring a shining shape back to the paper?

Think

Why did she change her plan for a whole room of stars?

Imagine

Where would one small magical light be most useful in a story you invent?

**Make something:** Draw a picture that uses just three points of light. Decide
what each light helps a character notice, find, or imagine.
