A story to read together

## The Talking Doll

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Tara’s aunt made her a cloth doll from pieces of a red dress, a striped scarf, and
a little yellow ribbon. The doll had yarn hair and a mouth shaped like a small,
patient smile. Tara named her Ruby and sat her beside the cardboard theatre she
was building for the school fair. Everything about Ruby was ordinary until the first
evening star appeared.

Chapter one

### A question from the windowsill

Tara was rehearsing a story about a mouse who wanted to reach the moon. “And then
the mouse found a silver bridge,” she said. A tiny voice answered from the windowsill.“
What happens next?” Tara nearly dropped her story cards. Ruby’s stitched smile had
not moved, but her head tilted slightly. “You can talk!” Tara whispered. “Only when
there is a story waiting,” Ruby replied. Tara began again. Whenever she hurried
past an interesting part, Ruby asked the same question, and the tale grew a little
more adventurous.

Chapter two

### A bridge with a missing knot

Together they imagined a silver bridge woven from moonbeams. It wobbled whenever
the mouse pretended not to be frightened. “Then the mouse should never be frightened,”
Tara decided. Ruby shook her yarn hair. “Or the mouse could be frightened and ask
for help.” Tara thought about that. They added a sleepy owl, a missing knot, and
a lantern made from a pear. The story was no longer perfectly tidy, but Tara liked
it better. She practised until she could almost hear the moonbeam bridge creaking.

Chapter three

### The quiet doll

At the fair, Tara placed Ruby beside the theatre. Children settled on the mats,
and the teacher nodded for her to begin. Tara told the first part clearly. Then
a gust scattered her story cards beneath the table. She looked at Ruby, waiting
for the tiny voice. The doll sat quietly in the daylight. Tara’s throat tightened.
For one long moment she could not remember what came next. Then a child in the front
row pointed at the cardboard bridge. “Is it supposed to lean like that?” he asked.

Chapter four

### A story she could tell

Tara looked at the crooked bridge and smiled. “The mouse has forgotten a knot,”
she announced. “Who knows a creature that could help?” The audience offered an owl,
a spider, and a very determined snail. Tara used their ideas to finish the adventure.
That evening, she set Ruby on the windowsill again. “Why did you not speak?” she
asked. The first star brightened. “You had a story waiting,” Ruby said, “and you
found your way into it.” Tara tucked the yellow ribbon neatly around the doll’s
waist. “Would you like to hear a new one?” she asked. Ruby tilted her head. “What
happens next?”

This is an original fantasy about a handmade toy and storytelling. Ask whether an
unexpected change can become part of an adventure, rather than spoiling it.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

What question helped Tara grow her story?

Think

How did the scattered cards change the puppet show?

Imagine

What surprising helper would you add to the mouse’s journey?

**Make something:** Make a simple paper puppet. Begin a story with a small problem,
then let a partner ask “What happens next?” three times.
