A story to read together

## The Proud Rose

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Rose grew beside the garden path, where visitors often stopped to admire her red
petals. She enjoyed the attention so much that she began to believe it made her
more important than the other plants. Beside her stood a small green cactus in a
sunny, well-drained bed. Rose looked at its spines and wrinkled her petals. “You
do not look much like a flower,” she said.

Chapter one

### A quiet neighbour

Cactus did not argue. “We grow in different ways,” she replied. Rose turned towards
the path, hoping another visitor would come. When Sparrow landed near the birdbath,
Rose asked which plant was the prettiest. Sparrow tilted his head. “I come here
for water and a safe place to rest,” he said. “I do not need to choose a prettiest
plant.” Rose thought that was a very dull answer. She had not noticed the shade
from the nearby tree, the seeds along the path, or all the other things that made
the garden useful.

Chapter two

### A hot, dry week

Then the weather grew hot, and several rainless days passed. The gardener used the
stored water carefully, checking each bed instead of pouring the same amount everywhere.
Cactus stayed firm because she was suited to dry conditions. Rose needed water sooner.
By afternoon, her leaves drooped, and her petals no longer looked crisp. She felt
too tired to boast. “How do you manage?” she asked her neighbour. “My stem stores
water, and my shape helps me use it slowly,” Cactus explained. “Your needs are different
from mine. That does not make either of us less worthy of care.”

Chapter three

### Noticing what was needed

The gardener returned in the cool of the evening and checked the soil around Rose.
She watered the roots and added a little mulch to help the earth hold moisture.
Rose slowly lifted her leaves. Nearby, Sparrow drank from the refilled birdbath.“
I thought this garden was mostly here for people to admire me,” Rose admitted. Cactus
looked around. “It gives different living things different kinds of help,” she said.
Rose noticed that the gardener had cared for each plant according to its needs.
Being noticed was pleasant, but it was not the only thing that mattered.

Chapter four

### A different kind of beauty

The next morning, a tiny yellow flower opened on Cactus. Rose leaned closer. “That
is lovely,” she said. “But I owe you an apology even if you had never grown a flower.
I judged you by how you looked.” Cactus accepted the apology. Later, when visitors
praised the red petals, Rose still felt happy. She simply stopped using their praise
to look down on her neighbours. She watched Sparrow enjoy the birdbath and the gardener
care for the beds. The garden had not become beautiful because one plant was best.
It flourished because many different lives had room to grow.

### Word basket

**humility**knowing your value without acting as if you are better than others

**admire**to look at something with pleasure or respect

**moisture**a small amount of water in something

**flourish**to grow and do well

**Read it together**

This original talking-plant fable uses real differences in plant needs. Appearance
and usefulness do not decide who deserves kindness. Ask what Rose learns before
Cactus’s flower appears.

## After the final page

There is no single right answer. Invite young readers to notice, wonder and imagine.

Remember

Why did Rose first think she was more important?

Think

How did the gardener care for plants with different needs?

Imagine

Why did Rose apologise even though Cactus did not need to prove she was beautiful?

**Make something:** Draw two very different plants. Label something each needs and
one thing you appreciate about each, then add a kind sentence they might say to
one another.
