## Every digit has a place.

Make the number visible before it becomes a symbol.

**3**HUNDREDS

**5**TENS

**2**ONES

352 = 300 + 50 + 2

Children may read **46** correctly and still think the 4 means four instead of four
tens. Place value makes more sense when learners build a number with objects, draw
what they made, and then connect the model to the written numeral.

**Teaching idea**Move in a steady sequence: concrete objects → visual models → numerals
and expanded form → short practice.

## What place value means

In 352, the 3 represents three hundreds, the 5 represents five tens and the 2 represents
two ones. So 352 can be decomposed as 300 + 50 + 2. The digit stays the same; its
position tells us what it is worth.

## A practical lesson sequence

Start with 34 counters. Let pairs group them into tens, then record the result as
3 tens and 4 ones. Show the same number in a place-value chart or an abacus. Next,
write 34 = 30 + 4 and ask learners to explain each part.

Then compare 205 and 25. Build both in a hundreds–tens–ones chart. The zero in 205
marks an empty tens place and keeps the other digits in their correct positions.

## Adapt the number range by class

Use the number range in your local syllabus. Begin with grouping and two-digit numbers,
then extend the same ideas to hundreds, thousands and larger numbers as learners
are ready. Focus on explanation: ask “How do you know?” and “Can you show it another
way?”

## Choose a tool for the learning goal

Use one interactive tool at a time and pause for learners to predict, explain and
compare strategies.

## Check for understanding

Ask learners to show 408 in a place-value chart, explain the zero, and write 527
in expanded form. Their explanation will help you decide whether to revisit grouping
or extend to larger numbers.

**Curriculum note:** This is a flexible teaching guide, not a class-wise syllabus.
Adapt it to your state or school curriculum.

### Teacher note

Start with manipulatives. Move to pictures and numerals after learners can explain
the groups they made.
