 3. Lesson 1 of 8

Vocabulary is the largest single block of the English content in APTET Paper I(A),
and synonym and antonym questions appear in almost every paper. This course covers
every vocabulary point in the official syllabus, starting with **synonyms** and **
antonyms**. You will learn a simple method for choosing the right option, the types
of antonyms, and a word list built for quick revision. The same skills help you
build word knowledge in a Class 4 or Class 5 English period.

## Synonyms: words with similar meaning

A **synonym** is a word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another
word: _big_ and _large_, _begin_ and _start_, _happy_ and _glad_. Very few synonyms
are perfect matches. _Thin_, _slim_ and _skinny_ all mean “not fat”, but _slim_
sounds positive and _skinny_ sounds negative. Choosing the right synonym therefore
depends on **context**.

### A four-step method for synonym questions

 * Find the **part of speech** of the given word (noun, verb, adjective, adverb).
The answer must be the same part of speech.
 * Make your own short sentence with the word, or read the sentence given.
 * Put each option into that sentence. Keep the option that keeps the meaning.
 * Beware of **antonym traps**: examiners often place the opposite word among the
   options.

### High-yield synonyms

  | Word | Synonym | Word | Synonym |
   | abundant | plentiful | candid | frank |
 | diligent | hardworking | eminent | famous |
 | feeble | weak | lucid | clear |
 | meagre | scanty | obstinate | stubborn |
 | prudent | wise | jubilant | joyful |
 | vacant | empty | ponder | think deeply |
 | wicked | evil | vast | huge |
 | brief | short | ancient | very old |

## Antonyms: words with opposite meaning

An **antonym** is a word opposite in meaning to another: _hot_ and _cold_, _accept_
and _reject_. Antonyms are of three common kinds.

  | Type | Meaning | Examples |
   | Gradable | opposites on a scale; there are in-between degrees | hot–cold (warm, cool lie between), big–small, easy–difficult |
 | Complementary | one excludes the other; no middle ground | alive–dead, true–false, pass–fail |
 | Relational | a pair that describes one relationship from two sides | buy–sell, teacher–student, give–receive |

### Antonyms formed with prefixes

Many antonyms are made by adding a **negative prefix**: _happy–unhappy_, _honest–
dishonest_, _possible–impossible_, _legal–illegal_, _regular–irregular_, _understand–
misunderstand_. The rules for choosing _im-_, _il-_ and _ir-_ are taught in Lesson
5.

### High-yield antonyms

  | Word | Antonym | Word | Antonym |
   | ascend | descend | permanent | temporary |
 | abundant | scarce | transparent | opaque |
 | barren | fertile | cordial | hostile |
 | humble | arrogant | generous | stingy |
 | optimist | pessimist | superior | inferior |
 | expand | contract | rigid | flexible |
 | frequent | rare | courage | cowardice |
 | artificial | natural | lucid | vague |

### Exam focus

 * The answer must match the **part of speech**: the antonym of _brave_ (adjective)
   is _cowardly_, not _coward_ (noun).
 * Read the question word carefully: “synonym” and “antonym” questions are often
mixed in one block, and the opposite word is a deliberate trap.
 * When two options look right, choose the one that fits the **sentence context**
   or is closest in strength.
 * Memory aid: **S**ynonym = **S**ame; **A**ntonym = **A**gainst.

## Teaching synonyms and antonyms in a primary class

### Example

In a Class 4 lesson about a village fair, Mrs Lakshmi writes _happy_ on the board
and asks children for “words that mean the same”. They offer _glad_, _joyful_ and
_cheerful_, which she adds to a word wall. Then she plays “Opposites Clap”: she
says _tall_, the class claps and answers _short_. Words are taught in a story context
first and in isolation later, so children learn meaning, not just lists.

## Key takeaways

 * Synonyms have the same or nearly the same meaning; antonyms have opposite meanings.
 * Always match the part of speech and test each option in a sentence.
 * Antonyms may be gradable, complementary or relational.
 * Many antonyms are formed with negative prefixes such as un-, dis-, im-, il-,
   ir- and mis-.
 * Examiners often place the antonym among synonym options, so read the question
   word carefully.
 * Teach new words in context, then reinforce them with word walls and games.

      * (C) ask children to copy each word ten times
      * (D) give a spelling test on the new words

Answers and explanations (tap to show)

 2. (D) Permanent means lasting; its opposite is temporary.
 3. (A) Candid means frank and honest in speech.
 4. (C) Barren land produces nothing; fertile land produces well.
 5. (C) Alive and dead exclude each other with no middle ground, so they are complementary.

    at all.
