Knowing the content is essential, but how you answer MCQs also matters. Small habits,
such as reading every option, eliminating wrong answers and managing time, can add
several marks. In this lesson you will learn practical strategies for APTET-style
questions, including the classroom **scenario questions** common in Child Development
and Pedagogy.

## Reading questions carefully

### Key words

Underline or note words that change the meaning:

 * **NOT**, **EXCEPT**, **INCORRECT**: you are looking for the wrong statement.
 * **BEST**, **MOST appropriate**, **FIRST**: several options may be partly right;
   choose the strongest.
 * **always**, **never**, **only**: absolute words are often (not always) a sign
   of a wrong option.

### Read all four options

Do not choose the first option that looks right. In “most appropriate” questions,
a later option may be better.

## Elimination and scenario questions

### Elimination

If you are unsure, remove options you know are wrong. Choosing from two options
is much easier than from four. Confirm in the official notification whether wrong
answers carry negative marks, and decide your guessing strategy accordingly.

### Pedagogy scenario questions

These describe a classroom situation and ask what the teacher should do. Use this
lens:

  | Usually correct options | Usually incorrect options |
   |  child-centred and activity-based |  rote memorisation as the main method |
 | inclusive: supports every learner | singling out, labelling or comparing children |
 | encouraging, with constructive feedback | punishment, humiliation or threats |
 | finds the cause of a difficulty | ignores the problem or blames the child |
 | involves parents positively | leaves the child behind |

### Example

_A Class 4 learner often makes mistakes in subtraction with borrowing. What should
the teacher do first?_

(A) Give extra homework (B) Diagnose where the misunderstanding lies using a few
examples (C) Move the learner to a lower class (D) Ask classmates to correct the
learner

The best answer is **(B)**. Diagnosis comes before remediation. Options (A), (C)
and (D) do not address the cause, and (C) and (D) may harm the child’s confidence.

## Time management and subject tips

### Plan your time

With 150 questions, aim to keep a steady pace. A common approach is two rounds:

 1. **First round**: answer everything you know quickly; mark doubtful questions.
 2. **Second round**: return to marked questions with the time saved.

Do not let one difficult maths question eat up several minutes.

### Subject-wise tips

 * **Mathematics**: estimate first; check answers by substituting back; watch units.
 * **Languages**: read the passage questions first, then the passage; for grammar,
   check every word of the sentence.
 * **EVS**: link facts to everyday life; watch for options that sound scientific
   but are wrong.
 * **Methodology**: think about the learner’s age, active learning and continuous
   assessment.

### Exam focus

 * Most lost marks come from misreading, not lack of knowledge, so slow down on
   key words.
 * Scenario questions reward the response that best supports the child’s learning
   and wellbeing.

### Learn from mock tests

After each mock test, analyse every wrong or guessed answer: was it a **knowledge
gap**, a **misread question** or a **time problem**? Fix the cause, not just the
question.

## Key takeaways

 * Watch for NOT, EXCEPT and BEST, and always read all four options.
 * Eliminate clearly wrong options to improve your chances.
 * In scenario questions, prefer child-centred, inclusive and supportive actions.
 * Answer in two rounds and do not get stuck on one question.
 * Analyse every mock-test mistake by its cause.

## Practice

 1. A question asks which statement is NOT a feature of child-centred education. You
     should look for:
 2.   * (A) a correct feature
      * (B) an incorrect feature
      * (C) the longest option
      * (D) the first option
 3. A child in Class 1 cries daily on arrival at school. The most appropriate teacher
     response is:
 4. * (A) Ignore the child until the crying stops
      * (B) Scold the child in front of the class
      * (C) Welcome the child warmly and use engaging activities to build security
      * (D) Send the child home
 5. In the two-round method, the first round is used to:
 6. * (A) attempt only the hardest questions
      * (B) read only Section A
      * (C) answer known questions quickly and mark doubtful ones
      * (D) change earlier answers
 7. After a mock test, a candidate finds many errors came from overlooking the word“
     EXCEPT”. This is a:
 8.   * (A) knowledge gap
      * (B) misreading problem
      * (C) time problem
      * (D) syllabus problem
 9. Which option is usually aligned with inclusive education?
 10. * (A) Separate seating for slow learners
      * (B) Teaching only from the textbook
      * (C) Comparing marks publicly
      * (D) Using varied materials so all learners can participate

Answers and explanations (tap to show)

 1. (B) “NOT” questions ask for the statement that is incorrect.
 2. (C) Warmth and engaging activities help young children adjust; scolding, ignoring
    or sending home do not address the child’s anxiety.
 3. (C) The first round secures easy marks quickly; doubtful questions are revisited
    in the second round.
 4. (B) Missing a key word is a reading error, so the fix is careful reading, not more
    content study.
 5. (D) Varied materials support diverse learners; the other options label or exclude
    children.
