 3. Lesson 1 of 6

Every successful exam plan starts with one question: _What exactly am I being tested
on?_ In this lesson you will learn what the **Andhra Pradesh Teacher Eligibility
Test (APTET)** is, how **Paper I(A)** is organised, and how its 150 marks are divided.
Knowing the structure helps you study in proportion to the marks instead of guessing.

## What is APTET?

APTET is an eligibility test conducted by the Department of School Education, Government
of Andhra Pradesh. Teacher eligibility tests in India follow from the **Right of
Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009**, and the national framework
for minimum teacher qualifications, which made passing a TET part of the eligibility
to be appointed as a teacher. A TET checks whether a candidate has the subject knowledge**
and** the understanding of children and teaching needed in a classroom.

### Paper I(A) and the other papers

APTET has more than one paper for different teaching levels and settings. This course
focuses on **Paper I(A)**, the paper for teaching at the primary level. Always check
the official notification to confirm which paper matches your qualification and
the posts you are aiming for.

## The structure of Paper I(A)

According to the official suggestive syllabus, all five sections are compulsory.

  | Section | Subject | Marks | Content | Methodology |
   | A | Child Development and Pedagogy, ICT Integration | 30 | 30 | — |
 | B | Language I: Telugu (or Urdu/Hindi/Kannada/Tamil/Odia) | 30 | 24 | 6 |
 | C | Language II: English (compulsory) | 30 | 24 | 6 |
 | D | Mathematics | 30 | 24 | 6 |
 | E | Environmental Studies | 30 | Science 12 + Social 12 | Science 3 + Social 3 |
 | | **Total** | **150 MCQs, 150 marks** | | |

### Content and methodology

In sections B, C, D and E, part of the marks test **content** (for example grammar,
fractions or the water cycle) and part test **methodology**, which means how to
teach that subject: aims and objectives, methods, teaching-learning material (TLM),
lesson planning and assessment. Methodology marks are relatively few per section,
but together they add up, and they connect closely to Section A.

### What the syllabus does not tell you

The syllabus does not state the exam duration, qualifying marks, whether there is
negative marking, or the exam dates. These details are announced in the **official
notification**. Never rely on rumours or old information; check the notification
on the official website.

### Example

Ravi, a D.El.Ed graduate, planned to spend two months only on Mathematics because
he enjoyed it. After studying the structure, he realised Mathematics is 30 out of
150 marks, the same as every other section. He rebalanced his plan so that every
section received regular attention, with extra time for Child Development and Pedagogy,
which he found hardest.

### Exam focus

 * Paper I(A) has 150 MCQs carrying 150 marks.
 * Every section carries 30 marks.
 * Methodology: 6 marks each in Telugu, English and Maths; 3 + 3 in EVS.
 * Pattern details beyond the syllabus must be confirmed in the notification.
 * Methodology questions ask how to teach a topic, so link them to Section A ideas
such as child-centred learning and CCE.
 * Questions on the paper’s structure are easy marks in introductory tests and quizzes;
know the numbers in the table well.

## Key takeaways

 * APTET checks both subject knowledge and understanding of teaching.
 * Paper I(A) has five compulsory sections of 30 marks each, totalling 150.
 * Sections B to E include methodology marks: how to teach the subject.
 * Study in proportion to marks rather than only your favourite subjects.
 * Confirm duration, qualifying marks and dates in the official notification.
