The Frog Prince
— The Frog Prince
Once upon a time, a beautiful princess loved to play with her golden ball in the palace gardens. One day, while playing near a well, she dropped her ball into the deep water.
As she wept, a frog popped his head out of the well and asked why she was crying. The princess explained her predicament, and the frog offered to retrieve the ball for her, but only if she promised to be his friend, let him eat from her plate, and allow him to sleep on her pillow.
The princess, thinking it a silly request, agreed, and the frog dove into the well, soon returning with the golden ball. The princess, delighted, took her ball and ran back to the palace, forgetting her promise.
The next day, the frog appeared at the palace door. When the king heard of the princess’s promise, he insisted that she honor her word. Reluctantly, the princess allowed the frog to join her for dinner and even to sleep on her pillow.
At first, the princess was disgusted by the frog. However, as time passed, she began to see past his slimy exterior. One night, feeling a mix of annoyance and a strange pity, she picked up the frog. In some versions, she throws him against the wall, and in others, she kisses him.
Suddenly, the frog transformed into a handsome prince! He explained that a wicked witch had cast a spell on him, and only a princess’s kindness could break it. The princess, now realizing the error of her initial judgment, had indeed shown him kindness.
In the end, the prince and princess became friends, fell in love, and lived happily ever after.
