  • 8 lessons

  • 2h 30m
  • Updated

APTET child development and pedagogy is the section most closely tied to being a good primary teacher, and “Understanding a Child” is where it begins. This course covers the first major unit of Section A of APTET 2026 Paper I(A): constructs of childhood, methods of studying children, growth, development and maturation, physical-motor milestones, and social, emotional, language and moral development, play and the sense of self.

Section A carries 30 of the paper’s 150 marks, and the ideas in this unit also appear in methodology questions across every subject. Each lesson explains concepts in plain language, compares theories in clear tables, connects them to real Andhra Pradesh primary classrooms, and highlights the confusions examiners like to test, such as growth versus development, longitudinal versus cross-sectional studies, and Kohlberg’s levels versus stages.

What you will learn

  • Explain childhood as a social construct and the idea of multiple childhoods
  • Compare methods of studying children, from observation to action research
  • Distinguish growth, development and maturation and apply the principles of development
  • Describe physical-motor milestones, developmental hazards and school factors
  • Explain social, emotional, language and moral development using key theorists
  • Use play and children’s developing sense of self to plan better teaching
