Welcome to My Five Senses, a free first science course for young explorers! The five senses for kids are a perfect way to start thinking like a scientist. In six short lessons, children discover how they see, hear, smell, taste and touch the world around them.

Scientists learn by observing, which means paying close attention with our senses. This course turns everyday moments, like eating breakfast or walking outside, into small science investigations. Each lesson explains one sense in simple words, shows how it keeps us safe, and ends with an easy activity.

What you will learn

  • Name the five senses and the body part used for each one
  • Describe things using sense words like bright, loud, sweet and rough
  • Understand how our senses help keep us safe
  • Learn simple ways to protect our eyes, ears and skin
  • See how senses work together
  • Make careful observations like a real scientist

Who this course is for

This course is for children in Kindergarten and Grade 1 (about ages 5 to 7). Older children who enjoy science activities will like it too. No reading is needed if an adult reads along.

A note for parents and teachers

Please supervise all activities. For the tasting lesson, only use foods your child is allowed to eat, and check for allergies first. Never ask a child to taste or smell unknown substances; part of this course teaches exactly that safety rule. Keep sessions short and hands-on, and let your child lead with questions. There are no wrong observations, only interesting ones.

What you need

Everyday items from home, such as fruit, a spoon, cotton wool, a small bell and different fabrics. The last lesson includes a “senses walk” project.
