APTET Cognition, Intelligence and Personality

APTET 2026 Paper 1A: cognition, Piaget, Vygotsky, Bruner, theories of intelligence, IQ tests, learning processes, personality and mental health.

  • 9 lessons
  • Intermediate
  • 2h 45m
  • Updated

This course covers the most theory-heavy part of APTET Child Development and Pedagogy. It explains APTET Piaget, Vygotsky and intelligence theories clearly and connects every idea to the primary classroom. You will study cognition and its processes, Piaget’s stages, Vygotsky’s social constructivism, Bruner’s concept formation, theories of intelligence, IQ and intelligence tests, how children learn, and personality, mental health and guidance.

Section A of APTET 2026 Paper I(A) carries 30 of the paper’s 150 marks, and questions on theorists, stages and tests appear year after year in teacher eligibility tests. Many candidates lose marks by mixing up similar names and terms: assimilation and accommodation, Spearman and Thurstone, projective and non-projective tests, rationalization and projection. Every lesson uses comparison tables, memory aids, classroom examples and an “Exam focus” box to make these distinctions stick.

What you will learn

  • Explain cognitive processes such as perception, attention, reasoning, metacognition and creativity
  • Apply Piaget’s stages and key concepts to primary classrooms
  • Use Vygotsky’s ZPD, scaffolding and Bruner’s modes of representation in teaching
  • Compare single-factor, two-factor, multifactor, group-factor, Guilford’s and Gardner’s theories of intelligence
  • Calculate IQ and distinguish types of intelligence tests
  • Compare theories of personality, assessment techniques, defence mechanisms and approaches to counselling
