Welcome to Alphabet Adventures! This free course helps young children learn alphabet letters and sounds in a calm, playful way. In eight short lessons, children meet all 26 letters, learn the difference between big and small letters, and discover the sound each letter makes.
Knowing letters and their sounds is the first big step toward reading and writing. When a child can see the letter b and say its sound, they are ready to start blending sounds into words. Each lesson is short enough to finish in one sitting and ends with a fun practice activity.
What you will learn
- Say and recognise all 26 letters of the English alphabet
- Match big (uppercase) and small (lowercase) letters
- Say the main sound of each letter
- Know the five vowels and spot consonants
- Hear the beginning sound of a word
- Put letters and simple words in ABC order
Who this course is for
This course is for children in Kindergarten and Grade 1 (about ages 5 to 7), and for older children who need a gentle review. No reading skills are needed to start.
A note for parents and teachers
The lessons are written so an adult can read them aloud. Point to each letter as you say it, and let your child trace letters with a finger in the air, in sand or on paper. Keep sessions short and cheerful: five to ten minutes of practice every day works better than one long session. Letter sounds are shown between slashes, like /m/, which means “say the sound, not the letter name”. Praise effort, not just right answers, and come back to earlier lessons whenever you like.
What you need
Paper, crayons or pencils, and some everyday objects to point at. Lesson 8 is a project where your child makes their very own ABC book.
