The Ugly Duckling

The Ugly Duckling

“The Ugly Duckling” tells the story of a duckling who is ostracised for his appearance but eventually matures into a beautiful swan and finds his place among his own kind.

The Ugly Duckling’s Journey

Once upon a time, a mother duck hatched a brood of ducklings. One stood out, larger than the rest, with feathers of a strange, mottled gray instead of the bright yellow of his siblings. The other ducklings, with their fluffy yellow feathers, chirped and huddled together, while this one was bigger, with coarse, grayish down. The other ducklings, and even the mother duck, thought he was ugly and made fun of him. They would often turn their beaks up at him, waddle away, and refuse to play with him. A deep sadness filled the ugly duckling’s heart, and he often found himself alone, watching his siblings play from afar. He longed to be accepted and loved, but everywhere he went, he was met with disdain and mockery.

A Search for Belonging

Leaving the farm, his small heart heavy with sorrow, he ventured into the wide world, seeking a place where he would finally belong. He travelled through fields and forests, encountering various animals, but none of them wanted to be his friend. The chickens clucked and scattered, the cows mooed and turned their backs, and the horses galloped away, leaving him in a cloud of dust. He spent a long, cold winter alone, shivering and hungry, taking shelter wherever he could find it. He dreamed of a time when he would be wanted.

As spring arrived, he spotted a flock of beautiful white birds gracefully swimming in a pond. An inexplicable yearning drew him to them. They were the most magnificent creatures he had ever seen, with their elegant necks and movements. Despite his fear of rejection, an inner force compelled him to approach. To his delight, they welcomed him with open wings and gentle voices.

The Swan’s Transformation

As he gazed into the water, he was astounded to see himself transformed into a graceful swan. His reflection no longer depicted a clumsy, grey bird, but a creature of beauty and elegance. He realised he had never been an ugly duckling; he had simply been a swan hatched among ducks. With a joyous cry, he joined the other swans, finding solace and belonging among his own kind. Together, they glided across the water, their white wings catching the sunlight, and soared through the sky with newfound grace and freedom.
