In one classroom, pupils may differ in prior knowledge, reading pace, language familiarity and confidence. You do not need to prepare a completely different lesson for each child. Keep one learning goal and adjust an example, prompt, practice route or way of showing understanding where it helps.
Five quick ways to adapt a lesson
Choose one clear learning goal
“Teach fractions” is broad. “Use a picture or number line to explain why 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent” is something you can observe. A precise goal makes it easier to decide what support is needed and who is ready to move on.
Prepare a scaffold and offer it when needed
Keep a worked example, step checklist, vocabulary card, diagram, number line or sentence starter ready. Begin with a small prompt; if a learner is still stuck, model a full example. Gradually remove the scaffold when they can work independently.
Offer three practice routes to the same goal
Keep the core question and learning goal in view. Give some learners structured prompts, most learners the standard task, and ready learners a reasoning or transfer challenge. These are not permanent levels: a learner should be able to move between routes as understanding changes.
Use short, temporary groups
Use a quick question, thumbs signal, mini-whiteboard response or exit ticket to see who needs what. Bring together learners who need a brief re-teach for one specific skill. Change or dissolve the group when that need has been met.
Offer a choice in how pupils show learning
When it fits the goal, let a pupil draw, explain aloud, solve an example or label a diagram. Keep the choices to two or three clear options so the activity stays focused. Check the underlying understanding against the same success criteria.
Quick example: equivalent fractions
Goal: Show two equivalent fractions with a picture or number line, and explain why they are equal.
Same goal, useful levels of support
One quick check for everyone: “Is 3/6 equivalent to 1/2? Show why with a picture or a sentence.” Use the responses to choose the next example.
Your 10-minute planning map
| Time | Plan this | Ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 min | Write one learning goal and one quick check for understanding. | What should pupils be able to do by the end? |
| 2–4 min | Prepare one temporary scaffold, such as a model, image or sentence starter. | Where might pupils get stuck? |
| 4–7 min | Write a core question, a supported version and an extension question for the same goal. | How can the practice vary while the goal stays clear? |
| 7–9 min | Choose a quick response method to decide whether a temporary group is useful. | What response would lead me to adapt the next step? |
| 9–10 min | Check learning against one success criterion; add or remove support as needed. | What is the next step for this class? |
Quick examples across subjects
- Language lesson: Everyone communicates the same idea; offer a word bank or sentence frame to some pupils, while those who are ready add a reason or a second example.
- Science: Let pupils show the same process with a picture, a labelled diagram or a short explanation.
- Maths: Begin with counters, a step card or a partly completed example; then invite pupils to try a similar problem without the scaffold.
