Teacher Burnout Prevention Checklist
A realistic guide to reviewing workload, setting workable boundaries, sharing systems and protecting recovery time—without treating a school-wide problem as an individual failure.
Make one change the school week can hold.
Small routines can help, and lasting improvement also needs supportive working conditions.

When teaching feels less rewarding, work never seems finished or exhaustion keeps returning, it is easy to tell yourself, “I just need to manage my time better.” But workload, staffing, unnecessary reporting and shifting deadlines are not always within one teacher’s control. Teacher wellbeing depends on personal routines and the way work is organised across a school.
A seven-point checklist for this week
- Name one pattern you notice: fatigue, growing distance from work, difficulty concentrating or feeling that nothing gets finished. Observe it without judging yourself.
- Make one complete task list: include planning, assessment, records, meetings, family communication and extra duties. Get the list out of your head and into a private note.
- Sort tasks into three groups: required now; useful but can be simplified or shared; and unclear in purpose, which needs a conversation.
- Simplify one task: check whether whole-class feedback, a focused sample or verbal feedback could meet the learning need within your school’s policies.
- Clarify one boundary: respect school policy, your role and urgent situations, while deciding when you normally respond to messages. Do not create a rule that every evening message needs an immediate reply.
- Ask one colleague to share work: plan a resource, lesson sequence or assessment approach together, or adapt a resource that already exists.
- Put a small recovery break on your calendar: protect a lunch break, a transition after school, a walk or quiet time—choose something that fits your actual week.
A 15-minute workload review
Choose a calm point at the end of the week or on Monday morning. Adapt this table to your class and school calendar; it should not become another task to complete.
| Step | Ask yourself | One next action |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Essential | What is genuinely needed this week for student safety, learning or a fixed deadline? | Write no more than three priorities. |
| 2. Simplify | What could take less time while still serving its purpose? | Simplify one feedback or record-keeping process. |
| 3. Share | What planning, model or responsibility could be shared with a colleague? | Ask or offer one specific form of help. |
| 4. Clarify | Why is this needed, who uses it and when is it due? | Ask a leader to clarify its priority or deadline. |
| 5. Recover | When will I actually take a break? | Protect one short break in your calendar. |
Words you can use to set a work boundary
When a message arrives after work
Adjust this to match your school’s emergency and communication policies.
When several tasks have the same deadline
When someone asks you to take on another responsibility
Systems that can reduce friction in a normal week
Use one template for repeat tasks
Use school-approved templates for lesson planning, routine family messages or feedback prompts. Notice what you are rebuilding from scratch each week.
Question records that feel mandatory
Ask who uses the data, what decision it informs and when it is reviewed. If the same information is entered twice without a clear purpose, raise consolidation or removal with school leaders.
Share planning with colleagues
Share common resources with colleagues teaching the same class or subject, then adapt them to your students. Avoid rebuilding a useful resource that already exists.
Review what can stop when something new starts
When a report or initiative is introduced, clarify its time, owner, deadline and purpose. Also ask leaders what existing work can be removed or paused.
This cannot be solved through personal habits alone
Reviewing your own routines can help, but understaffing, unrealistic deadlines, frequently changing instructions and unnecessary paperwork are organisational issues. School leaders also need to listen to staff, clarify priorities, remove processes that do not help and protect time for collaboration. Raise a specific example, its effect on students or your work, and one practical change that could help.
A small two-week action plan
| When | Action | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Today | Write down open tasks and simplify one of them. | What did I make shorter or clearer? |
| This week | Talk with a trusted colleague about one shared task and one pressure point. | Did I ask for specific help? |
| Next week | Request a short conversation with a leader about priorities or deadlines. | Did we agree on one change to a task or process? |
| After two weeks | Review what helped and what still needs to change. | What support do I need next? |
When to seek additional support
If exhaustion, sleep difficulties, persistent low mood or difficulty managing everyday tasks continue, speak with a trusted doctor, counsellor or mental health professional. Ask whether your school offers an employee assistance programme or health support. This is not a request to diagnose yourself; it is a reminder that you do not have to manage a persistent struggle alone.
Useful tools for preparing classroom practice
A short practice quiz or set of flashcards may help with lesson preparation. If you use The Curiosi AI Quiz & Flashcard Maker, review the class level, answers and language yourself. It is not a substitute for school-level action to reduce workload. Courses available through membership are a separate member benefit.
