What Teachers Wish Parents Knew About Homework
A calm, practical guide to helping children get started, encouraging them to think for themselves and working with the teacher when homework is confusing or too much.
Your role is to support learning, not to teach every lesson.
Small, warm check-ins can help children build confidence and independence.

Homework can become stressful for children and parents—especially when time is short, instructions are unclear or the lesson is taught differently from how an adult remembers it. Family interest and encouragement can support learning. That does not mean parents have to become the teacher, supply every answer or complete the work for the child.
What is a parent’s role during homework?
| You can… | Your child can… |
|---|---|
| Help read the directions and get started. | Try what they know and explain an answer in their own words. |
| Set out the book, pencil or school-approved tool they need. | Gather their materials and put them away when possible. |
| Ask, “What felt easy? Where did you get stuck?” and listen. | Say what makes sense and what does not yet make sense. |
| Notice an honest effort and a useful strategy. | Remember that the work is theirs and a mistake can show what they are learning. |
| Contact the teacher if the work repeatedly feels too hard or too much. | Show where they got stuck and practise asking for help. |
Match your support to your child’s stage
Early primary: read together and invite a retell
Read or listen to a story and invite your child to retell it in their own words. For letters, numbers or short practice tasks, model one example and then let your child try. If no homework is assigned, there is no need to add extra worksheets.
Middle primary: ask first, then offer a hint
Ask, “What have you tried?” or “Is there an example like this in your lesson?” Offer one small hint, then give your child time to do the next part.
Older students: support planning and independence
Break a larger assignment into steps and let your child decide when to begin each one. Check on progress once, without needing to supervise every minute.
Try these five steps when your child says, “I can’t do it”
- Pause for a moment: If your child is tired or hungry, take a short break before returning to the task.
- Read the directions together: Ask your child to explain what the task is asking in their own words.
- Start with one small part: Ask, “What information do you have in the first question?” or “Which word is confusing?”
- Offer one hint: Point to a relevant example in the book, then leave room for your child to try.
- If it still is not working, mark the stopping point: Keep the child’s attempt as it is, note the confusing part and tell the teacher where they got stuck.
Questions that help a child think
“What do you already know?”
“Is there an example like this in your book?”
“What is the first small step?”
“Can you explain it in your own words?”
A simple routine that fits a real home
- Choose a time that suits your family: Homework does not have to start the minute your child gets home. Find a place in your routine after a snack, rest or play.
- Choose the calmest available spot: A separate study room is not required. A clear corner of a table, a mat on the floor or another clean space can work.
- Keep only the task materials nearby: Use the book, pencil and school-provided sheet. Do not assume a printer, new device or paid supplies are required; ask about alternatives if something is unavailable.
- Allow short movement breaks: Depending on your child and the task, standing up, stretching or getting water can help them reset.
- Let your child do the final check: Ask whether the task is finished, needs to go into the bag or includes a question for the teacher.
If another language is spoken at home
Reading stories and talking about everyday life in your home language are valuable learning experiences. If your child is learning to read in English, discussing a story in Telugu or another family language can still help them explore its meaning. Your child should practise reading or writing in the language requested by school, but you do not need to translate every sentence. Ask the teacher for language support if the directions are hard to understand.
When homework feels too difficult, too much or unclear
One difficult evening does not by itself mean something is wrong. But if instructions are repeatedly unclear, your child cannot move forward without prolonged help, homework regularly leads to conflict, or the task assumes internet access, a device or supplies your family does not have, contact the teacher instead of struggling silently. The school’s homework guidance, class expectations and your child’s needs should all be part of the conversation.
A short message you can send to the teacher
[Child’s name] got stuck on [task/question]. We tried [what you tried], but [which part was unclear/how long the task took]. Could you let us know which part the child should complete independently and where adult help is expected? I can also let you know if we do not have access to a device or materials the task needs. Thank you.
Three small language changes that can make homework calmer
| Instead of… | Try… |
|---|---|
| “Why haven’t you finished yet?” | “Which part is done? What is the next small step?” |
| “This is easy!” | “This feels hard right now. Which part could we start with?” |
| Giving the answer for your child | “I’ll give you one hint, then you try.” |
Want a little extra practice?
If your child wants to practise one topic already taught in class, The Curiosi AI Quiz & Flashcard Maker can create a short quiz or flashcards. An adult should review the answers, class level and language. It is not a replacement for homework assigned by the school. Courses available through membership are a separate member benefit.
