A story to read together

Sleeping Beauty

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Long ago, a king and queen welcomed a baby daughter named Aurora. They invited the fairies of the kingdom to celebrate her birth. The fairies gave Aurora lovely gifts: beauty, grace, and a kind heart. But one fairy, Maleficent, had not received an invitation. She felt hurt and angry, and cast a frightening spell on the baby princess.

Chapter one

A blessing and a spell

Maleficent said that on Aurora’s sixteenth birthday, the princess would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into an endless sleep. The last fairy had not yet given her gift. She could not erase the spell, but she softened it: Aurora would sleep until the spell’s time was complete, and then she would wake.

The king and queen tried to keep Aurora safe. They asked everyone in the kingdom to put away spinning wheels. The fairies stayed close, watching over the princess as she grew.

Chapter two

The quiet castle

On Aurora’s sixteenth birthday, she wandered into a high room in the castle and discovered an old spinning wheel. She had never seen one before. As she reached toward it, she pricked her finger on its spindle and fell into a deep sleep.

The fairies gently laid Aurora in a bed. A peaceful spell spread through the castle, and everyone fell asleep too. Outside, roses and thorny vines grew around the walls. Seasons passed, and the castle became quiet beneath the green branches.

Chapter three

A path through the thorns

Many years later, a prince named Phillip heard the story of the sleeping castle. He wanted to see whether the tale was true. With help from the good fairies, he found a safe path through the thorny vines.

Inside, Phillip saw that the whole kingdom was asleep. He found Aurora resting in a quiet room. He did not disturb her. He stood nearby and spoke gently: “I hope you wake when the time is right.”

Chapter four

A kingdom wakes

At that very moment, the spell’s long time had ended. The fairies’ gentle magic shimmered through the room. Aurora opened her eyes and woke by herself. Slowly, the rest of the castle began to stir: a yawn here, a stretch there, and then happy voices filled the halls.

Aurora thanked the fairies for protecting her. She and Phillip introduced themselves and talked about the quiet years and the world beyond the castle. In time, they became close friends and chose a future together.

Aurora helped make the kingdom a welcoming place, where people could celebrate together and no one would be left out. The thorns faded, the garden bloomed, and the castle was full of life again.

What changed after the last fairy softened Maleficent’s spell?

Think

Which details show that the castle had been asleep for a very long time?

Imagine

If Aurora could explore one place in her kingdom first, where would she go?

Make something: Draw the castle garden before and after the spell breaks. Add three details that show the kingdom is waking up.
