A story to read together

The Clever Fox

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

After a night of rain, a forest stream rushed over its banks and covered the path to the sunny hill. Fox Ren had promised to carry a pouch of seeds there. Rabbit and Tortoise wanted to come too, but the water was moving quickly.

Chapter one

A stream after the rain

“I can jump across,” Ren began. Then he stopped to look. The middle of the stream was fast, and the stones were wet. He watched a leaf spin past and knew that rushing would be a poor plan. “Let us find a safer way,” he said. His friends were glad he had paused.

Chapter two

The twig test

Ren dropped a small twig into the water. It floated quickly near the middle, then drifted into a quiet bend beside the bank. Ren pointed to the shallow-looking spot, but he did not leap onto the stones. “We still need someone who knows how to make a steady crossing,” he said.

Chapter three

Neighbors work together

A beaver was nearby, gathering branches that had already fallen. Ren asked for advice. The beaver chose a sturdy branch and checked that it rested firmly on both banks. Squirrel held one end while the beaver settled the other. Ren tested the bridge gently. Then Rabbit crossed with the seed pouch, and Tortoise followed at a careful pace.

Chapter four

A clever choice

Everyone reached the hill safely and planted the seeds. “You noticed the water and asked for help,” Rabbit said. Ren smiled. “A clever idea should help everyone, and a clever friend knows when not to hurry.” Soon green shoots appeared on the hill, and the friends celebrated their careful teamwork.
