A story to read together

The Little Fairy’s Adventure

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Lumi was the smallest fairy in the moonlit garden. That evening, she had an important job: carry a drop of silver dew to the moonflower beside the wall. When the drop touched its centre, the flower would open and release its soft light for the moths’ night gathering. Lumi polished an acorn cup until it shone, filled it from a leaf, and set off before the first stars appeared.

Chapter one

The drop that fell

At first, Lumi flew straight between the tall stems. Then a gust shook the fennel flowers. Her cup tipped, and the silver drop slipped away into the soil. Lumi landed on a stone, blinking hard. She had wanted to do everything without help. The moonflower was waiting, and she had lost the one thing she was carrying. A spider nearby paused in her weaving. “You look as though the night has become much larger,” she said. Lumi explained. The spider pointed to her web, where several clean dew drops glimmered like tiny moons.

Chapter two

A bridge made of a leaf

With the spider’s permission, Lumi collected one drop from the outer thread. She thanked her and held the cup more carefully. Beyond the web lay a puddle left by the afternoon rain. The air above it swirled too strongly for her small wings. A beetle was trying to turn over a broad fallen leaf beside the bank. Lumi helped lift one edge. “You could float across in this,” the beetle suggested. Together they pushed the leaf onto the quiet water, and Lumi stepped aboard with her shining cup.

Chapter three

The dragonfly’s shadow

The leaf moved slowly until a new breeze began to wrinkle the puddle. Lumi crouched low, keeping the cup steady. A dragonfly hovered beside her. “May I guide your boat towards the sheltered edge?” he asked. Lumi nodded gratefully. He flew just above the leaf, making a small pocket of calm, while she used a grass stem to steer. At last the leaf touched the far bank. Lumi climbed onto a dry petal, cup and drop still safe. Across the path, the moonflower’s white bud was beginning to tremble.

Chapter four

The light at the end

Lumi carried the dew to the flower and let it fall gently into the centre. The petals opened in a slow white spiral. Light spread over the grass, and the first moths drifted close. “You brought the evening,” whispered the moonflower. Lumi looked back towards the puddle, the leaf, and the web. “I brought the drop,” she said. “Several neighbours helped bring me.” At the gathering, she told the whole adventure, including the part where she had lost her first drop. Being the smallest fairy had not made the journey impossible. It had given her a reason to discover how much help a garden could hold.
