A story to read together

The Elephant’s Promise

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Esha the elephant promised to meet Rabbit at the red-flower clearing on Friday morning. Rabbit was bringing a picture book they wanted to read together. “I will be there after breakfast,” Esha said. She tied a little red ribbon to her own satchel to remind herself. All week, Rabbit looked forward to the visit. On Thursday night, rain pattered through the wood and filled the low places beside the path.

Chapter one

The path after rain

In the morning, Esha found the narrow way to the clearing muddy and blocked by a fallen branch. She stopped on dry ground. She could not tell how firm the low patch was, and she would not hurry through it just to arrive on time. Tortoise came along the wider path and saw her looking worried. “I made a promise,” Esha explained. “Rabbit may think I have forgotten.” Tortoise asked whether Rabbit knew about the blocked path. Esha realised that he probably did not.

Chapter two

A message that helped

Tortoise was going towards Rabbit’s home by the wider route. Esha asked whether he could carry a message. He agreed. “Please tell Rabbit that I remember our meeting,” she said. “The short path is blocked. I will use the wide path, so I will arrive later. He may choose whether to wait or meet another day.” Tortoise repeated the message to make sure he had it right. Then he continued at his usual steady pace. Esha followed the broad route with her book tucked safely in the satchel.

Chapter three

The waiting place

Rabbit had already set out when Tortoise found him at a fork in the path. He listened to the message and looked at the two painted symbols on the post: a leaf for the narrow route, a flower for the wide one. “I can wait by the flower sign,” he said. “It has a dry seat.” Tortoise explained where Esha would come from. Rabbit was disappointed that their morning had changed, but he no longer had to guess what had happened or whether to keep looking for his friend.

Chapter four

Two books and one honest answer

When Esha arrived, she thanked Rabbit for waiting and explained the delay. She did not claim that a ribbon could stop rain or keep every path open. Rabbit showed her the dry seat. They could read there, then decide whether to visit the clearing later. Esha took out her book, and Rabbit opened his. Their meeting had begun differently from the one they imagined. Still, both friends knew what the other had chosen. Next time Esha made a plan, she would remember the ribbon—and leave room for an honest message if the way changed.
