A story to read together

The Princess and the Pea

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

A prince wanted to meet someone who was kind, curious and honest. He traveled to many places, but he did not want to judge anyone by clothes or riches. One stormy night, a traveler knocked at the palace gate, soaked from the rain.

Chapter one

A rainy arrival

The traveler said she had lost her way and asked for a warm place to rest. The queen welcomed her inside and gave her dry clothes and a cup of tea.

Chapter two

A restless night

The traveler slept beneath the many blankets but woke several times. She felt a small bump under the mattress and could not find a comfortable position.

Chapter three

A different kind of test

The prince was impressed by the traveler’s honesty and thoughtfulness. The queen admitted that the pea test was silly and did not really prove who someone was.

Chapter four

Knowing a person

The prince and traveler became friends by talking and helping the palace neighbors repair storm damage. They learned what mattered to each other over time.

What does the story exaggerate for a humorous effect?

Imagine

What did the pea test show, and what could it not tell the queen?

Make something: Design a fair way for two new friends to get to know each other. Avoid tests and include a kind conversation.
