A story to read together
The Story of Prahlada
Take your time. Let the story unfold.
In the Bhagavata Purana, Prahlada is a young prince devoted to Lord Vishnu. His father, King Hiranyakashipu, wants everyone to obey his own power above all else. The boy and the king live in the same palace, but they understand strength very differently. Prahlada’s story follows a faith that his father cannot command away.
The lesson he treasured
At school, Prahlada hears lessons about gaining power and separating friends from enemies. Yet he thinks of Vishnu with love and sees others with an even heart. When his father asks what he has learned, Prahlada speaks about devotion: listening, remembering, and offering service to the Lord. This is not the answer the king wants. His anger grows, and he puts his son in terrible danger. In the traditional account, divine protection keeps Prahlada safe through these trials.
The palace pillar
At last, the king calls Prahlada before him again. He demands to know where the boy finds such strength. Prahlada tells him that the same divine power supports everyone. The king points to a palace pillar. Can Vishnu be there too? Prahlada’s answer is yes. The king strikes the pillar. A great sound fills the hall, and Narasimha appears: Vishnu in a wondrous form, part lion and part human. The king fights him and is defeated and killed. His cruel rule ends.
A gentle prayer
Narasimha is still fierce after the battle. Those gathered nearby hesitate to approach. Brahma asks Prahlada to go forward. The boy trusts the Lord’s affection and bows before him. Narasimha places a hand on his head. Prahlada offers prayers filled with devotion. He does not boast about his courage or his royal birth. His prayer turns attention away from pride and towards the mercy of the Lord. The great anger gives way to tenderness towards the child.
A heart without a bargain
When Narasimha offers blessings, Prahlada does not ask for riches in exchange for worship. He wishes to serve without greedy desires. He also asks for his father’s spiritual welfare, remembering him with compassion after all that has happened. Prahlada is entrusted with the kingdom. In this devotional story, his victory is more than surviving danger. It is keeping love for Vishnu and concern for others within his heart.
