A story to read together

The Flying Carpet

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

The old carpet had lived beneath Grandmother’s sewing table for as long as Sami could remember. Its blue border was faded, and one corner had a patch shaped like a little star. One evening, Sami and his sister Lila carried it into the courtyard to shake out the dust. The carpet sneezed. Then it lifted three inches above the ground.

Chapter one

The carpet wakes

Sami and Lila sat in the centre while Grandmother came to the doorway, looking more amused than surprised. “Hold the woven loops,” she called. “And remember: it follows the kindness in its threads.” Before they could ask what that meant, the carpet rose gently above the rooftops. The courtyard became a small square below. In the evening sky, clouds gathered like floating islands with silver edges. Lila pointed towards a little cloud shaped like a lamb. It was moving in circles, far from the others.

Chapter two

A cloud with no flock

The carpet glided beside the lamb-shaped cloud. “Have you seen the rain clouds?” it asked in a voice like a soft splash. It had drifted away while chasing the colour of sunset. Now it did not know which way to go. Sami looked for a sign on the carpet’s border. A line of blue stitches pointed towards home, but the patched corner had begun to loosen. Without that corner, the pattern kept turning. “We can help each other,” Lila said. She took a blue ribbon from her braid.

Chapter three

Following the silver edges

Lila tied the ribbon through the loose woven loops while Sami steadied the corner. The little cloud sheltered them from the breeze until the repair was firm. The carpet’s border shone again. Farther west, a family of rain clouds flashed softly inside, like lanterns behind curtains. The children guided their small companion towards them. As it joined its flock, it shook out a few drops that became tiny rainbows in the last light. The repaired blue corner warmed beneath Lila’s hand. The carpet turned towards a familiar courtyard.

Chapter four

The story in the stitches

They landed beside Grandmother’s sewing table just as she put out three cups of warm milk. “Did it find an adventure?” she asked. Sami and Lila talked at once: cloud islands, a lost lamb, a ribbon, rainbows. Grandmother listened and helped sew the corner properly. “Why does it follow kindness?” Sami asked. She ran a finger along the old border. “Every patch remembers someone who helped.” Lila added one small silver stitch for their cloud. The carpet settled quietly beneath the table. To anyone else, it looked like an old rug with a careful repair. The children knew that some maps are woven from the things we do for one another.
