Classroom management is not only about keeping pupils quiet. It also means making expectations clear, teaching routines before they are needed and calmly redirecting behaviour when something goes off track. Short, respectful prompts that focus on the next action can help you avoid a long lecture in the middle of a lesson.
Four habits that help in many situations
- Describe the action, not the pupil: “You haven’t started yet” is clearer than “You never work.”
- Say what to do: Give the expected action, not only “Don’t do that.”
- Keep it brief and calm: When possible, move closer and use a quiet voice rather than correcting a pupil in front of everyone.
- Notice the helpful behaviour: Instead of a general “Good job,” name the action: “Thanks for closing your books and lining up when the signal sounded.”
Seven scripts to adapt for your classroom
When pupils are getting settled
“Open your books and put your pencil by question one. I’ll check back in two minutes.”
Name the materials, first task and when you will return to check in.
When moving from one activity to another
“Thirty seconds left. Finish your sentence, put your pencil down and move to your group when I say ‘go.’”
Give an advance signal, then state what comes next, the steps and when to begin.
A brief, low-disruption redirect
“We’re on question three now. Start there; I’ll come back to you in two minutes.”
Give one clear first step. A quiet cue or proximity may be enough before a more public correction.
Respect the idea and remind the class of the turn-taking routine
“I want to hear your idea. Use our agreed signal, and I’ll come to you after this answer.”
Remind pupils of a participation routine you have already taught. Use an agreed alternative signal when a pupil needs one.
Check whether there is a barrier behind the behaviour
“I notice you haven’t started. Which part feels difficult? Shall we do the first line together, or would a two-minute reset help before you begin?”
Offer two workable choices calmly. If this happens often, check the task, directions, reading demands and the pupil’s support needs privately.
Make the space safe first
“Stop. That isn’t safe. Put the object down and take one step back. When everyone is safe, we’ll speak calmly, one person at a time.”
If there is immediate risk, do not rely on words alone. Follow your school’s safety and support procedures and call the appropriate staff.
Describe, explain impact, listen and agree a next step
“I noticed you called out several times during maths. It made it hard for you and nearby pupils to keep working. What was happening for you? What could we try during the first ten minutes next lesson?”
Listen before deciding why it happened. Agree on one small next action and check back later.
Make the wording more useful
| Instead of… | Try… | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| “You never listen.” | “Put your pencil down and listen to this direction; then it’s work time.” | Names a next action instead of judging character. |
| “Be quiet!” | “When I’m speaking, face this way and keep your hands free.” | Makes the expected behaviour visible. |
| “Everyone is ready except you.” | “The ready pupils have opened page 24. Open yours now too.” | Gives a model and step without comparison or shame. |
| “Good job!” | “Thanks for stopping when the signal sounded and listening to the direction.” | Shows exactly which behaviour helped. |
What if the script does not work?
Instead of repeating the same phrase more loudly, check whether the pupil understood the direction, could access the task and might need help with attention, language or another barrier. If the same behaviour keeps happening, briefly note when it occurs, what happened before it and what helped afterwards. If needed, work with family, a colleague, a learning support team or a school counsellor according to school procedures.
