✦A teaching parable told by Sri Ramakrishna
Narada and the Farmer
A quiet lesson about devotion amid daily duties.
A story to read together
Narada and the Farmer
Take your time. Let the story unfold.
Narada begins to think that no one is more devoted to the Lord than he is. The Lord sends him to meet a farmer.
A busy day
The farmer remembers Hari in the morning, then takes his plough into the fields. Before sleeping, he remembers Hari again. Narada sees the long day of work and wonders how this man can be a great devotee.
A full cup
Narada returns with his doubts. The Lord gives him a cup filled with oil. He must carry it around the city and return without spilling a drop.
One careful journey
Narada watches the oil throughout the walk. When he returns, the Lord asks whether he remembered him along the way. Narada admits that all his attention was on the cup.
A different understanding
The Lord points again to the farmer. Despite his work and family responsibilities, he remembers the divine each day. Narada’s comparison has missed that quiet devotion. The parable invites a more humble way of seeing.

Why is Narada doubtful at first?
What holds his attention on the walk?
What might someone miss when judging another person too quickly?
