The Story of Bhakta Dhruva
Take your time. Let the story unfold.
In the Bhagavata Purana, Dhruva is a young prince who longs for his father’s affection. One day, he tries to sit beside him, but his stepmother speaks harshly and the king does not welcome him. Dhruva goes to his mother Suniti, hurt and angry. She holds him close and guides his thoughts towards Lord Vishnu.
A wish in his heart
Suniti asks Dhruva not to wish harm upon others. She speaks of the Lord as a shelter for those in distress. Dhruva resolves to seek him, though his heart still wants a place of great honour. The sage Narada meets the determined boy. At first he urges Dhruva to return home. Seeing his resolve, he then offers guidance in devotion and directs him to Madhuvana beside the Yamuna.
Guidance in the grove
Narada teaches Dhruva to remember Vishnu, offer worship, and repeat a sacred mantra. Dhruva follows his guidance in the grove. The traditional story describes extraordinary spiritual discipline, which this gentle retelling passes over. His attention becomes steady. Meanwhile, his father regrets rejecting his little son.
A greater treasure
Vishnu appears before Dhruva. The boy opens his eyes and sees the Lord he has been remembering within his heart. Vishnu touches his forehead with a conch, and Dhruva is able to offer prayers. He receives the promise of a lasting celestial place. Yet he now feels ashamed that he first sought worldly honour. Meeting the Lord has shown him something more precious than being greater than someone else.
A welcome and a steady light
Dhruva returns home to an affectionate welcome. His father embraces him; his mother and brother rejoice. The child who left in sorrow is received with love. The larger account follows his life beyond this homecoming. As a king, he cares for his people, and eventually receives the celestial place promised to him. Dhruva’s story is remembered in Hindu tradition for steadfast devotion and his connection with the Pole Star, called Dhruva Tara.
