A story to read together

The Farmer and His Sons

Take your time. Let the story unfold.

Farmer Hari had tended his vineyard for many years. He knew which vines needed more shade, which patch of earth dried first, and when the grapes were ready to pick. His three grown sons loved the farm, but they often dreamed of an easier way to earn a living. They hoped some wonderful piece of luck would arrive before the next season’s work.

Chapter one

A treasure in the vineyard

One spring, Hari hurt his knee and needed to rest. His sons brought him water and asked what they should do about the vineyard. “There is treasure in that ground,” he told them. “If you work through it carefully, you may discover what I mean.” The brothers looked at one another. Treasure! They imagined a pot of coins beneath the vines. Hari reminded them to leave the roots safe and to loosen only the soil between the rows. The next morning, all three were ready before breakfast.

Chapter two

Row after row

The eldest brother worked along the sunny edge. The middle brother cleared stones from the narrow paths. The youngest broke up the hard crust of earth between the rows. Whenever they found an old piece of pottery, they called the others over, but no coins appeared. By evening their hands were tired. “Perhaps the treasure is in the next row,” one said. So they returned the following day. They asked their father how to recognise the roots and how deeply to loosen the earth without harming the vines.

Chapter three

Nothing that glitters

After several days, they had worked through the whole vineyard. They had found stones, worms, and one lost metal button—but no chest of gold. The brothers sat beside Hari, disappointed. “Was there ever a pot of coins?” they asked. “I did not promise coins,” he replied gently. “I wanted you to discover what this land can give when someone cares for it.” They wished he had explained more clearly. Hari agreed that he should have. Then he asked them to look at the vineyard before deciding their effort had been wasted.

Chapter four

The real harvest

The loosened soil let water sink in, and the cleared paths made the vines easier to tend. Guided by their father, the brothers kept watering, watching, and working through the summer. The harvest was a good one, with baskets of sweet grapes to sell. As they counted the earnings, the youngest smiled. “The treasure was something we helped grow.” Hari nodded. Luck had not done the work for them, and one good harvest did not solve every problem. But the brothers had learned useful skills, shared the effort, and discovered that patient care could make their family’s land fruitful.
