How to Build Relationships With Hard-to-Reach Students
When connection feels difficult, begin with predictable, low-pressure moments. A respectful greeting, a remembered interest and a reliable follow-through can open a door over time.
Connection grows through consistency.
Offer a safe invitation. Let the student set the pace.

Some students may be quiet, turn down help or rarely join classroom activities. Instead of treating “hard to reach” as a fixed label for a child, think of it as a relationship that has not developed yet. There may be many reasons for a pupil’s behaviour; we cannot know the cause in advance. Our job is to notice with curiosity and offer safe opportunities for connection.
Six small, steady ways to build connection
Begin with a low-pressure greeting
Greet the pupil by name at the door, smile or nod. If they do not respond, do not treat it as rejection. Offer the same calm greeting the next day.
Learn an interest without turning it into an interview
Notice what the student reads, draws, plays or talks about at break. Ask one small question and respect it if they choose not to answer. Later, you might use that interest as an example in a lesson.
Offer reliable, practical help
If the student has fallen behind, show them where to begin. After an absence, offer a clear route to notes, a task list or extra help. Following through on a small promise can matter.
Offer more than one way to communicate
Some students may not want to speak in front of the class. Let them choose whether to speak with you later, write a short note or check in another time. Do not pressure them to share personal details.
Repair the relationship after a difficult moment
If something you said hurt the student, acknowledge your part directly. Avoid defending yourself with “but you also…” Listen, then discuss classroom expectations or the impact of what happened calmly.
Show belief in the student while offering a choice
Give a clear, manageable start without implying “you can’t do this.” Offer a choice about the first step, an example or working with a partner while keeping the learning expectation clear.
A simple two-week routine for building rapport
You do not need a long conversation every day. For ten school days, choose one small, natural action: greet the student, help them start a task, ask about an interest or return when you said you would. Notice whether you are showing up with respect and consistency, even if the student does not talk much. Progress can be slow. If there is no immediate change, do not turn connection into pressure or a transaction.
| What you notice | Try this | One next step |
|---|---|---|
| The student is not talking | Offer a greeting without requiring a reply. | Keep greeting them respectfully; offer a note or later check-in if useful. |
| The student does not start work | Show the first small step and ask calmly if the direction makes sense. | Find out whether the work is too hard, unclear or needs another kind of support. |
| The student returns after an absence | Welcome them without blame and help organize missed work. | Decide together what to do first. |
| You have had a conflict | Speak privately, name what happened and listen to the student. | Agree how to repair the moment and clarify classroom expectations. |
Boundaries, safety and support
A caring relationship does not mean a teacher has to solve every problem alone. If a student tells you about a safety risk, abuse, self-harm or danger to someone else, do not promise secrecy. Follow your school’s safeguarding procedure and tell the appropriate responsible person. If concerns continue, work with the family or caregiver, counsellor, learning support team or a trusted colleague according to school policy.
