The 3 Types of Feedback Students Actually Use
Useful feedback does more than point out a mistake. It gives a learner a clear next move—and time to try it.
Feedback is a bridge to the next try.
Keep it tied to the learning goal, and make room for students to use it.

Comments such as “Good job” or “Make this better” often do not tell a student what worked or what to do next. Useful feedback is linked to a learning goal and gives the learner a small action to try. The loop closes when students get time to use that information.
Three types of feedback students can use
What is correct, and what needs fixing?
Point to a specific part of the student’s answer, writing or solution. Then name the next revision that connects to the same learning goal.
Useful: “Your topic sentence makes the problem clear. Now add one piece of evidence in the second sentence and explain how it supports your point.”
This answers “Where am I now?” and “What should I do next?”
Guide the way the student is working through the task
Notice the method, not only the final answer. Offer a prompt, model or question that helps the student take the next step without immediately giving the whole solution.
Useful: “You identified 36 as the total. Draw three equal groups next and work out how many are in each. Then check whether your answer adds back to 36.”
Process feedback can help a learner use the approach on another problem.
Prompt students to monitor their own work
Use a checklist, self-question or quick reflection to help students notice their progress. Name what to check instead of only saying “Check your work.”
Useful: “Before submitting, check three things: Did you show each step? Did you include the unit? Does the answer make sense compared with your estimate?”
This kind of prompt helps students spot and correct mistakes for themselves.
Turn vague comments into useful feedback
| Instead of… | Try… | Type |
|---|---|---|
| “Add more detail.” | “Add one example to support your point and explain in a sentence why it fits.” | Task |
| “The calculation is wrong.” | “Your steps are correct up to multiplication. Recheck the final subtraction and compare it with your estimate.” | Task + process |
| “Make your writing neater.” | “Read each sentence and mark where it needs a full stop. Then read it aloud once.” | Self-check |
| “Try harder.” | “Identify the step where you got stuck. Let’s practise that step together once.” | Process + next step |
A short feedback loop: tell, allow time, revisit
- Share the goal first: Explain one or two clear success criteria for the work.
- Notice what students are doing: Use a quick question, sample response or exit ticket to see where the class is.
- Give only one or two next steps: Choose the most useful action instead of giving a long list of comments.
- Make time for a revision: Students should use the feedback to correct an error, rewrite a paragraph or attempt a similar question.
- Check again: Did the revision improve? Can the student use the same idea in a new example?
A classroom example
First: teacher feedback
“You chose the right equation. In step two, divide both sides by 4. Write that step, then substitute your answer into the original equation to check it.”
Next: student action
The student corrects the equation and substitutes the answer to check it. The teacher then offers a new equation for the student to solve using the same method.
Feedback can be written or spoken. Whichever format you choose, connect it to the learning goal, provide it at a useful time and give the student an opportunity to act. One clear comment that moves learning forward is often more useful than writing a note on every line.
Create a short quiz for practice after feedback
Choose a concept that students need to practise and use The Curiosi AI Quiz & Flashcard Maker to select a class, difficulty and language, then generate a few questions. It can give students a similar problem to try after correcting an error. Check the questions, answers and language before use. Member courses are a separate membership benefit.
