Ganga’s Descent to Earth
Take your time. Let the story unfold.
In this Hindu sacred account, King Bhagiratha hopes to bring Ganga, the heavenly river, to earth. Her waters can bring release to his ancestors.
A prayer carried forward
Bhagiratha’s father and grandfather had worked towards this wish without success. He continues with deep devotion. At last, Ganga appears and listens to his request.
The river’s questions
Ganga asks who can bear the force of her falling waters. She also asks how she will be freed from the sins people leave in her. Bhagiratha answers: Shiva can receive her; holy devotees can help keep her pure.
Shiva receives Ganga
Bhagiratha turns to Shiva in prayer. Shiva agrees to help. As Ganga descends, he receives her powerful waters upon his head. The Ramayana describes the rushing river held within the coils of his hair. Bhagiratha prays again, and Shiva releases her towards Bindu Lake. From there, seven streams spread out. One follows Bhagiratha’s chariot. What seemed an overwhelming rush now has a way forward.
The journey reaches its purpose
The river advances with a mighty sound. In the Ramayana’s description, fish and other water creatures move with the waters, while heavenly beings gather in wonder. Sometimes the stream rushes, sometimes it bends, and sometimes it travels slowly. Bhagiratha continues ahead in his chariot. At last, Ganga reaches the ashes of his ancestors and brings them release. The wish carried across generations has become a sacred journey from heaven to earth.
