Healthy Habits for Kids course cover with eat, run and rest word cards

Healthy habits for kids are small routines that help care for the body and make everyday life feel more comfortable. This beginner course introduces handwashing, a variety of foods, sleep and rest, active play, toothbrushing, and balanced screen use. Children learn that healthy routines can look a little different for each family and that trusted adults can help.

The six lessons move from simple personal care to a practical plan. Learners practise the steps for washing hands, explore foods and drinks, and think about calm routines for bedtime and play. They learn how to care for teeth with adult support and how to leave room for screens, rest, movement, and time with other people. The final lesson helps learners make a flexible habits chart and practise asking for help when they need it.

What you will learn

  • Describe when and how to wash hands with soap and water
  • Notice a variety of foods and choose water with adult support
  • Build calming routines for sleep and rest
  • Explore safe, enjoyable ways to move and play
  • Practise toothbrushing, balanced screen routines, and asking a trusted adult for help

Who this course is for

This course is for children around ages 5 to 8 in Kindergarten through Grade 2, and for other young learners practising everyday routines. Parents, teachers, and caregivers can read the lessons aloud and adapt the ideas to a child’s needs, culture, and family routine.

Prerequisites

No health knowledge is needed. Learners only need a trusted adult to help with routines, toothbrush supplies, food choices, and screen rules. The lessons do not replace advice from a child’s doctor or dentist.

A note for parents and teachers

Food, sleep, movement, and care needs can differ among children and families. Follow guidance from the child’s health professionals, especially for allergies, medical conditions, dental questions, or sleep concerns. Avoid making a child feel bad about food, body size, or routines they cannot control. Praise effort and ask what support would help.
