How to Teach Place Value in Classes 1–5: A Step-by-Step Guide

Place value becomes easier when children can see and build a number before they are asked to work with symbols alone. A child may read 46 correctly but still think the 4 means four, rather than four tens. This guide moves from objects to pictures to numerals, with a flexible class-wise progression and free interactive tools from The Curiosi.

Use the examples as a teaching sequence and adjust the number range to your learners’ textbook, board and current understanding.

What place value means

In our base-ten number system, a digit’s position tells us its value. In 352, the 3 represents 3 hundreds, the 5 represents 5 tens and the 2 represents 2 ones:

352 = 300 + 50 + 2

Children understand this more securely when they make groups, exchange ten smaller units for one larger unit, and explain what they notice. The NCERT National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage describes hands-on materials such as counters, bundles of ten, bead strings and place-value cards as useful mathematics TLM for early number learning.

A flexible learning path for Classes 1–5

This is a suggested progression, not a fixed syllabus. Follow your state or school curriculum and move forward when learners can explain their thinking, not just repeat a procedure.

Class 1: Make and count groups

Begin with objects children can move. Count ones, then make a group of ten. Build two-digit numbers within the range being taught: for example, 24 is 2 groups of ten and 4 ones. Ask, “What does the 2 tell us? What does the 4 tell us?”

Class 2: Build and break apart two-digit numbers

Practise making the same number in more than one way. For 36, learners might show 3 tens and 6 ones, or 2 tens and 16 ones. Compare numbers by looking at tens first, then ones. Introduce expanded form when the concrete models are familiar.

Class 3: Connect hundreds, tens and ones

Extend the exchange idea: ten ones make one ten; ten tens make one hundred. Build and partition three-digit numbers such as 407 and 582. Give special attention to the zero in 407: it marks an empty tens place while the 4 still means four hundreds.

Class 4: Work with thousands and larger numbers

Extend the place-value chart according to the class syllabus. Learners can read, build, compare and decompose four-digit numbers, including numbers with zero in an internal place. Ask them to explain why 4,205 is not the same as 4,025.

Class 5: Use place value flexibly

Work with larger numbers in the range required by the local curriculum. Practise expanded form, regrouping, estimation and explaining how place value supports addition and subtraction. Ask learners to represent one number in several ways and justify which representation helps them solve a problem.

A step-by-step lesson you can use

Suggested time: about 35–40 minutes. Use smaller numbers for learners who need more support and larger numbers for extension.

1. Start with a quick check

Write 34 on the board. Ask learners to show it with counters or draw it. Invite a few explanations: “How many tens? How many ones? How do you know?” This helps you hear their current ideas before introducing a new model.

2. Build the number with objects

Give pairs 34 counters, seeds, buttons or paper squares. Ask them to group the counters in tens, then count what remains. Record their model as 3 tens + 4 ones. Let learners check each other’s groups before writing the numeral.

3. Show the same number in a place-value model

Draw columns labelled Tens and Ones, or use bundled sticks, an abacus or base-ten blocks. Place 3 in the tens column and 4 in the ones column. Say the unit with each digit: “3 tens, not just 3.”

For a visual digital demonstration, open Place Value Lab: Build the Number by Blocks. Learners can watch a numeral become a model and connect the model back to the written number.

4. Connect the model to expanded form

Write 34 = 30 + 4. Point back to the groups: the 3 tens are worth 30, and the 4 ones are worth 4. For an extension, ask learners to make 34 as 2 tens and 14 ones. Discuss why the total stays the same.

5. Introduce a zero placeholder with a concrete example

Compare 205 and 25. Build both in a hundreds–tens–ones chart. In 205, there are 2 hundreds, 0 tens and 5 ones. The zero keeps the tens place open so the other digits stay in the correct positions. Ask learners to explain how the numbers differ.

6. Practise forming, ordering and explaining numbers

Choose a tool to match the lesson goal, rather than sending learners through every activity at once:

  • Number Builder Challenge — practise making numbers from digits and discussing how a digit’s position changes its value.
  • Place Value Pro Game — provide guided practice with the Indian number system.
  • Interactive Number Line Tool — connect number size, order and distance after learners build the numbers.
  • Place Value Blast — use for a short recap once learners have explored the idea.
  • Digital Abacus 2.0 — model quantities on a visual abacus and discuss the value represented in each place.
  • The Magic Vault — connect hundreds, tens and ones to money contexts and explore making or breaking larger units.

For whole-class teaching, project one tool and pause often: ask children to predict what will happen, explain a move, and compare two strategies. For individual practice, give learners one clear goal and a short turn, then bring the discussion back to the maths.

7. Finish with an exit check

Ask each learner to answer one or two prompts on paper or aloud:

  • In 63, what is the value of the 6? Explain how you know.
  • Show 408 in a place-value chart. What does the zero tell us?
  • Write 527 in expanded form and draw or describe a model for it.

Use the answers to decide whether the next lesson should revisit building groups, practise reading the chart, or extend to larger numbers.

Common difficulties and helpful responses

  • “The 5 in 52 means 5.” Ask, “5 what?” Have the learner point to or build five tens, then connect that amount to 50.
  • Zero is ignored. Build 206 beside 26 in a chart. Discuss how zero holds the empty tens position and keeps 2 in the hundreds place.
  • Learners can say a number but cannot build it. Return to counters, bundles or an abacus. Ask them to make the number before writing it.
  • Expanded form becomes a memorised rule. Keep each part tied to a model: 300 is three hundreds, 40 is four tens, and 2 is two ones.
  • Regrouping feels like a trick. Demonstrate an exchange with objects: ten ones are traded for one ten, while the total amount remains unchanged.

Ways to adapt the activity

  • For extra support: use two-digit numbers, keep a labelled place-value chart visible, and allow learners to touch and move the objects as they count.
  • For a challenge: use numbers with zeros, ask learners to make the greatest and smallest numbers from a set of digits, or find more than one decomposition of the same number.
  • For a mixed-level class: keep the same question but vary the number size and the amount of support. Learners can build, draw or explain their answer orally.
  • For home practice: use bundles of ten small objects, page numbers, house numbers or shopping totals as conversation starters. Ask children to explain what one digit represents.

Quick assessment checklist

A learner is ready to move on when they can do most of the following independently:

  • Build a number with objects or a visual model.
  • Name the value represented by a digit in a given position.
  • Explain how ten ones can be exchanged for one ten, or ten tens for one hundred.
  • Write a number in expanded form and connect each part to a model.
  • Explain the role of zero in a number such as 205 or 4,032.

Accuracy matters, but the explanation is just as useful: it shows whether the learner understands the value or is only copying a pattern.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start teaching place value?

Start with counting, grouping and comparing quantities, then connect groups of ten to written numbers when learners are ready. The NCERT Foundational Stage framework includes understanding numerals up to 99 through the decimal place-value system; the sequence and number range for later classes should follow the relevant state or school curriculum.

How do I explain face value and place value?

The face value is the digit itself. Place value is what that digit represents in its position. In 352, the face value of 5 is 5, while its place value is 50 because it is in the tens place.

Which tool should I use first?

Start with a concrete model such as counters or the Place Value Lab. Then use the Number Builder Challenge for digit formation, and finish with a short practice activity such as Place Value Blast.

352 = 300 + 50 + 2

34 = 30 + 4 అని రాయండి. నమూనాలోని సమూహాలను చూపిస్తూ, 3 పదుల విలువ 30; 4 ఒకట్ల విలువ 4 అని చెప్పండి. అదనపు సాధనకు, 34ను 2 పదులు మరియు 14 ఒకట్లుగా చేయగలరా అని అడగండి. మొత్తం ఎందుకు మారలేదో చర్చించండి.

  • Number Builder Challenge —
  • Place Value Pro Game —
  • Interactive Number Line Tool —
  • Place Value Blast —
  • Digital Abacus 2.0 —
  • The Magic Vault —
