The Crow and the Pitcher

The story “The Crow and the Pitcher” is

about a thirsty crow who finds a pitcher with water at the bottom, but cannot reach it. Using its intelligence, the crow drops pebbles into the pitcher one by one, raising the water level until it can drink. The story teaches that cleverness and persistence, even with small efforts, can help overcome big problems.

One sweltering summer day, a thirsty Crow flew across the land. The relentless sun had dried every stream and puddle he knew. His throat was aching, and his wings felt heavy with exhaustion. He desperately searched for any sign of water, his keen eyes scanning the ground below.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he spotted a small, round pitcher sitting beneath a tree. Hope surged through his tired body. He immediately swooped down, landing gracefully beside it. Peering inside, he saw, to his great relief, that there was indeed some water at the bottom.

However, his heart sank almost instantly. The water level was too low. His beak, long as it was, could not reach the precious liquid. He tried tilting the pitcher, pushing it with his feet, and even pecking at its sides, but the heavy vessel remained stubbornly immobile. Frustration mounted as his thirst grew more intense.

The Crow paused, his mind racing. He knew he couldn’t overturn the pitcher, nor could he break it. He looked around, his gaze falling upon a pile of small pebbles nearby. An idea, a spark of ingenuity, ignited in his clever mind.

He picked up a pebble with his beak, then carefully dropped it into the pitcher. A tiny splash, and the water level rose ever so slightly. Undeterred, he flew back to the pile, then returned, dropping pebble after pebble. Each splash lifted the water a fraction more.

Patiently, painstakingly, the Crow continued his task. He flew back and forth, gathering one pebble after another, dropping each one into the pitcher. The work was slow and arduous, but his determination never wavered. He focused solely on his goal.

Gradually, stone by stone, the water level steadily climbed. Higher and higher it rose, until at last, it reached the very brim of the pitcher. With a triumphant caw, the Crow dipped his beak into the cool, refreshing water and drank deeply, quenching his agonizing thirst.

He had succeeded, not by force or by magic, but by intelligence and perseverance.

Moral of the Story:

Necessity is the mother of invention. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Persistence in small efforts conquers great difficulties.
