IFSC Code Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between IFSC and SWIFT code?
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is used exclusively for domestic transfers within India (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS). SWIFT codes (or BIC) are used for international wire transfers coming from outside India into your bank account.
2. Can I use a branch's IFSC code for a different branch?
No. Each bank branch has a unique 11-digit alphanumeric code. Using the wrong IFSC may result in the transaction being rejected or, in rare cases, credited to the wrong branch account pool. Always verify the branch name using our tool before sending money.
3. What happens if I enter the wrong IFSC but correct account number?
Per RBI guidelines, banks primarily process transfers based on the Account Number. However, if the IFSC belongs to a different bank or a non-existent branch, the system may flag the transaction and return the money to the sender's account within 2-24 hours.
4. Did IFSC codes change after the recent Mega-Bank Mergers?
Yes. Following the merger of banks like Allahabad Bank, Syndicate Bank, and others, old IFSC codes became invalid. If you are using an old code for banks like PNB, Canara, or Indian Bank, please use our 2026 Updated Finder to get the new active code.
5. Is the 5th character of the IFSC always a zero?
Yes. The 11-character structure is: 4 letters (Bank Name) + 0 (Control Character) + 6 characters (Branch Identity). The 5th character is a placeholder reserved for future use by the Reserve Bank of India.
