The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

The story “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse” tells of a Country Mouse who lives a peaceful, simple life. His city cousin visits and tempts him with the luxuries of urban living. However, the Country Mouse quickly discovers that the city’s abundance comes with constant fear and danger from cats and servants. Realizing that safety and peace outweigh luxury, he returns to his quiet country home, preferring simple fare over a life of anxiety.

The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

In a humble field, a Country Mouse lived a simple yet fulfilling life. He diligently gathered grains and roots, then drank from clear puddles. He truly cherished the quiet peace of the countryside. One day, his sleek cousin, a Town Mouse from the bustling city, came to visit.

The Country Mouse, overjoyed by his cousin’s arrival, immediately offered the best of his simple provisions: fresh barley, sweet dried berries, and cool water. However, the Town Mouse nibbled disdainfully, wrinkling his nose. “My dear cousin,” he declared, “how can you possibly survive on such meager provisions? This food barely suits a creature of our refinement! Come with me to the city, and I will personally show you true abundance and undeniable luxury.”

Although the Country Mouse felt content with his life, his cousin’s grand descriptions certainly piqued his interest. Consequently, he accepted the invitation and journeyed with the Town Mouse to the bustling city.

They soon arrived at a grand house, where the delicious aroma of various foods filled the air. The Town Mouse skillfully guided his cousin through a hidden passage directly into a magnificent dining room. There, on a large table, lay the tempting remnants of a lavish feast: scattered crumbs of rich cake, succulent morsels of cheese, and glistening drops of sweet wine.

“Feast, my dear cousin!” the Town Mouse whispered excitedly, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. “This is truly the life of plenty!”

The Country Mouse, wide-eyed with wonder, eagerly began to nibble at the exquisite delicacies. He had never tasted such rich flavors before! But just as they thoroughly enjoyed their meal, a sudden, terrifying sound echoed loudly through the room. “Squeak!” cried the Town Mouse, instantly darting for cover. A large cat had silently entered the room, its eyes gleaming ominously in the dim light.

The two mice quickly huddled together in a tiny crevice, trembling intensely with fear, until the cat finally departed. “That was an incredibly close call!” panted the Town Mouse, trying hard to regain his composure.

They had barely ventured out again when the heavy footsteps of a servant approached. The dining room door creaked open, and a broom swept dangerously close to their hiding spot. Once again, they frantically scrambled for safety, their hearts pounding wildly in their chests.

The Country Mouse, his whiskers still twitching nervously from the fright, looked directly at his cousin. “My dear friend,” he said, his voice still trembling, “you certainly live in luxury, but I now see it demands a terrible price. All this fine food is simply not worth the constant fear and unending danger. I much prefer my simple fare and quiet life in the country, where I can eat my barley in peace and absolute safety.”

Immediately after this realization, the Country Mouse bid his cousin farewell. He then scurried back to his peaceful home in the fields, never again longing for the dangerous luxuries of the city.

Moral of the Story: A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety. Simple living with security is always preferable to luxurious living with constant danger.
